I'm a current student in NYC and I'm planning on transferring to school in Hawaii (on Oahu). I hear the unemployment rate is low so that's great. I have the option of living on campus or off campus w/my boyfriend. He's in the navy and currently stationed in Pearl Harbor. He gets housing allowance of about $1300 so the apartment would be paid for by the navy. What could we find for $1300? We'd need something that is close to Waikiki and also near Pearl Harbor. I also hear there's a commissary in which we could get cheap groceries. It's so expensive in Hawaii! We don't have a car yet but I don't think we will get one. I have a dog but I think I'm going to leave him here in NYC. . . My boyfriend and I love to travel, cook, party, go to the beach, hike, swim, boat, enjoy nature, etc. I have no clue what to expect in regards to living in Hawaii or moving there. I wanna know EVERYTHING about Hawaii, and Oahu. I've been doing SO much research, reading every thread that interests me and just googling and reading things on the web. Any help or anything you could tell me would be GREAT! Thanks =)

[SIZE=2]I moved to Hawaii last June. I moved from California. I am not military but there are a few commissaries. One in Barbers witch is coast guard base. There a PX on Schofiled. And a NEX in Pear City. There is also a commissary in the same building. I would recommend a car. This is not the east coast. you idea of public transportation is quite different then the Hawaiian style public transportation. And 1300 is reasonable for a half way decent apartment. You will not find a house at this price.. And you will not find a “classy” apartment either. If u want to live in Waikiki you will need a car to get to pearl harbor. Most busses run the other direction in commute hours. I’m sure you have many more questions, Hawaii is an amazing place and I would advacate any one moving here. I would be more that happy to answer some more questions u might have.Moderator cut: Please use the DM feature to contact other members. Thanks.
Mahalo and the best of luck

cant agree with dmoon more. I lived in Hawaii for 5 years (Navy also)...and now live on Long Island. I say go for it...you can always find money. Hawaii is an absolutely fantastic place to live.

I'll be spending 3 weeks this summer for a Navy exercise...and cannot wait to get back. Feel free to message me with any questions...its a big adventure!
