Hi there,
Thanks for all the great info you have provided. My husband and I are moving to Oahu this September and are getting nervous because we will not have jobs when we arrive. I would like to know if folks hiring in Hawaii will only call someone if their phone number is from Hawaii and address is of Hawaiian geographic locations. I have applied for a handful of government jobs and while I have been put on the eligible list for several, I have received no direct calls from anyone. Is it likely I will get more calls when when I move there?

Also, does anyone have opinions regarding a shipping container vs. a pallet (besides price?) We may have to store our stuff when we get there until we find a place to live. We don't have much stuff but really want to take our bed...I'm starting to wonder if shipping is worth it. We could just have our friends send some boxes once we get there and avoid shipping altogether. Any thoughts would we kindly appreciated.

I don't doubt that no one has called you. Get an 808 number, even if you just get a temporary throw-away cell phone. When you get there, immediately get a Hawaii driver's license. You must make it appear as if you are already a local. No one wants to bother calling mainland job applicants because they get so many resumes from mainland people that end up never moving.

Leave (or sell) virtually everything you have. It's easier and you will find that most of your possessions aren't really worth having here anyway.

I know a company on Hawaii that will hire a person if they are in PR because they are not getting qualified applicants. But most get so many they stop taking them. If you have a person who is on Hawaii that is qualified, why risk an offer on someone not here who may decide not to come? State and County jobs are on hold due to budget issues so unless its something they must hire for, don't hold your breath. Having a local number will help to get the call, but when they talk to you, they will now know your not on the islands. Many companies have stopped advertising for jobs because they get inundated with people from all over, so they are using agencies to weed out the wannabe relocators.

Get a round trip ticket when you get plane tickets with an extended or changeable return if you can. You may want to have an exit strategy in place. Jobs are few and far between and any jobs go to folks living here first unless you have some skill set not readily available here.

"Living here" sort of means folks that have been here for a year or more, prior to that amount of time it is sort of considered an extended vacation and the people could leave at any time. There is a huge amount of folks who move over here and leave within six months to a year so most employers don't want to bother with folks that are more than likely going to leave. It's just the way it is, it's been like that for decades.
