HI EVERYONE!!! We decided we want to move to Albany so I can go to Linn-Benton and it seems a bit cheaper than Corvallis? Any opinions or advice concerning life in Albany? Such as weather, job potential(retail would be fine),and atmosphere. Is there a good community vibe? Crime, drug problems? Thank you!!!

Yes.

There is crime and drugs. Not as many drugs as Coos Bay, but they are common. There is more Gang activity in Albany. The vibe is Conservative Blue Collar Working Class mostly, with a little of everything else thrown in. Weather is one of the warmer (Hot) spots in the summer and can have the drizzles as much as the Bay Area in the winter. You are close to Corvallis, Eugene, and Salem. Plenty of local shopping. There is a Wal-Mart.

I think there is a new one opening in Albany soon.

You work at WalMart in Coos Bay? Find out from them about the one in Albany; you might be able to transfer there when it opens.

LOL....though jobs aren't easy to find in Albany and transferring might be a good way to get a start.

Albany's all right. It's in a good location; you can go to a lot of places from there. The weather is similar to Salem and Eugene. Might be a little rougher around the edges than Corvallis but honestly I'd trade that myself for not living in a small college town (they're great places but just not for me).

Albany is a great place to buy guns. It's slightly cheaper than Corvallis and it has a Target, which is something, but I wouldn't move there. Unemployment is very high, and the general atmosphere seems to be paranoid, hateful, and extremely conservative. It's kind of like small town deep south, only somehow it got lifted up and transported to western OR.

That said, it may make sense for you. It'll obviously be close to school, and Albany is far, far better than more eastern Linn co (Lebanon, Sweet Home, etc).

Albany has alway been that way. Just more out of work these days and the illegals seem to be sprouting, along with gang activity, But Albany is still the same old Albany less the truck stop. There is a porn shop there now.

How bad is the gang activity? Ideally we want to be in Bend but my husband cant get his job transfer there. This was the next closest thing. But I have a 4yr old and a baby on the way...I dont want to live in the hood and worry about drive bys and our cars being broken into. How bad is it? apparently the gang violence has gone up where I live but i have never noticed it.
