I got my info from the USDA, those noted Frankenfoodie gossipers - 93% of US soybeans planted in 2012 were an HT variety (dig further to find that 90% of those were a single variety from Monsanto).

Making soybeans less incredibly unhealthy is a dubious achievement.

And this is the Oregon forum, not the Farming or Green forums where these arguments take off ad naseum.

There is some evidence that Organic crops, grown correctly in small 5-10 acre patches intermixed with other crops out perform GMO crops. The argument against is that it's more labor intensive that way and farmers don't like that practice because they don't get as much as cash as a single monocrop would.

GMOs (in the US and Europe, anyway) are maximized to develop profit, not nutrition, taste or any other consumer issue.[/quote]

Not true.
Monsanto has developed a GMO rice that has loads of vitamin A which will help immensely with preventing blindness in poor countries.
Look up "golden rice" to get the story.
Why is Monsanto the whipping boy for all the greenies?
You would think they would like plants that need fewer pesticides and fertilizer.
Sounds like knee jerk anti corporate mentality to me.

The objection being that it will cross pollinate with the broccoli seed crop. My mom has 40 acres of turnip seed coming this year, and canola would contaminate that too. Brassicas are promiscuous cross pollinators.

Of course, all rape seed was once poisonous, thanks to its high erucic acid content. Canola was developed in Canada in the 1970s (CANada Oil), and replaces what was once 40% erucic acid with oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat. Current strains of canola yield oil with 0.5% to 1% erucic acid, well within FDA safety guidelines.

Well, actually the whole the world is over populated montra is completely false... see article Baby Bust: Is the World's Population Actually Declining? | TIME.com
and Episode 1: Overpopulation: The Making of a Myth | Overpopulation is a myth

I am not part of the problem, my husband and I have 9 children, we grow our own food, are self sufficient and buy 2nd hand things. I am putting 9 people into the work force to contribute to a broken and starving social security system. What are you doing for the future of our country? I am the solution.
