Personally I really dislike Disneyworld. It's overpriced, commercial, disconnected from real life, on and on.

That being said, I DO like Orlando, and I'm interested in the State of Florida. Since Orlando is a bit of a newer city, it seems most people go there because they want to live or work at or near Disneyworld.

But is there a whole other element in the city who just despises or wants nothing to do with Disneyworld? Or does Disneyworld just go with the territory. Kinda like if a person moves to Vegas, they are going to be around casinos whether they like them or not.

I "like" disney world. It wasn't a poll option so I picked #4.

I think if you have children, you have to like Disney! Yes it's not "real", but that's part of its appeal!

I love Disneyworld and we're retired! Lots of friends, without kids go there as passholders too. It's for adults and kids.

As a long time local, I can say we all appreciate Disney but it's a love/hate relationship. We love the fact that Disney powers the economic engine of our local economy, for better or worse. Disney affords us alot of benefits not usually reserved for a city our size such as world class entertainment, dining, resorts, golf, etc. If you grew up in Orlando its highly likley you worked at one of our local themeparks as one of your first jobs, so we can all love that we have a common experience. However, we do, at the same time, hate that our identity is tied to a mouse and castle. There's so much more to Orlando, and so much more that was here well before the mouse, but everyone assumes it's all a Magic Kingdom here. That being said there are 2 distinct Orlando's, the Orlando you visit (aka the tourist corridor) and the Orlando you live in (aka the "real Orlando"). Pretty much once you get north of the Mall of Millenia area Disney is just some park miles away. Most people on the northside of the Metro have little to no interaction at all with the tourists and theme parks. Go to Seminole county and the only remotely Disney thing you will see is the Disney Store. I have lived in Orlando for nearly 20 years, I have not been to Disney or any other theme park more than once a year in almost 10 years. It's not that I don't want to, or don't like the parks, but just like anyone else going to the themeparks is expensive. I have to plan for it just as anyone in the midwest or northeast would. Granted I don't have to pay for flight, hotel, etc, I still have to pay nearly $100 for park admission. Being a local I could spend half that going to the beach, the springs, boating on the lakes, etc. Disney is great and we hope it maintains it's popularity, it keeps us going, but we're more than happy just letting the tourists knock themselves out while we reap the other benefits.

Without Disney, Orlando would be a bump in the road as it basically didn't have a lot going for it. If not liking, I would say "learn to like" if you're enamored with living here.

With Disney, however, the seeds were laid to create a regional, national and global entertainment/tourist destination as the family-friendly cousin to Las Vegas IMO.

No. The only thing Disney is good for is Food & Wine Festival..and that's only because I know people that can get me in for free. Otherwise I would never go there.

I used to love Disney world, and sometimes I still do, but I would say I like it a lot. You didn't have that option. I find it weird that people who live less than 20 mins from the mouse, haven't been in years or have never gone. It pretty much permeates so much of our daily live's here, without you even realizing it. I understand if you live in Seminole County, not really being inundated with Disney 24/7, but it's pretty hard not to when you live in Orange, Osceola, or even Polk county. We chose to live in Dr. Phillips, and I think it's far away enough where I feel like I'm in a real neighborhood, but close enough that I can go to the Osbourne Lights tonight at Hollywood Studio without thinking twice!
