[quote=cloven;42586410]Happy Monday January 11, everybody-and welcome to QOTD.
Posting early because there's a gusty wind outside, with risk for power outages in area
Today’s Question:
Does your home have doorstops (mounted or wedge)-or do you use items for that purpose ? LINK ---> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doorstop
We have door stops for every door and some of them are 105 years old. We look for them at every salvage yard we go to to replace the new ones with antique ones. Extra Credit:
Do you know how to use-
a slide rule ? Nope. LINK ---> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slide_rule a graphing calculator ? Nope. LINK ---> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphing_calculator
Bonus:
Have you ever-
worn a helmet ? We just bought some for skiing.
made a candle ? Yes, when I was a teenager.
set off a backyard rocket ? Well not a legal one
had to abandon a vehicle mid-journey ? No but we had to have one of our trucks towed out of the ally. The tie rod broke just as I turned in. We were on the highway with it the day before
used an ejector seat/floatation cushion/parachute ? No
had a limb in traction ? No but we'll see after skiing season is over. I'm a disaster on two legs.
Just for Fun:
Have you ever studied and/or communicated using-
smoke signals ?
semaphore (waving flags on sticks) ?
Morse Code ?
Have you seen the British mystery series “Inspector Morse” (or read the books by Colin Dexter) ?
No to all of the above. Today in History:
1787: Oberon & Titania, moons of Uranus, discovered by astronomer William Herschel
1805: The U.S. Congress passes an act establishing Michigan Territory
1932: Birth of director & actor Alfonso Arau
1946: Birth of singer-songwriter Naomi (Diana Ellen) Judd
1952: Birth of author Diana Gabaldon
1971: Birth of singer-songwriter & actress Mary J. Blige
1972: Birth of actor Marc Blucas
Today’s Word:
emolument /iˈmälyəmənt/ (n.): Wages, payment, salary, compensation for work done.
Today Is:

Wishing you a day filled with convenience, C-D peeps
Thanks Cloven but -15 wind chills is not convenient. We're going to bundle up and walk to the store for pet food. The car will never warm up by the time we get there and back anyway. We might as well get some exercise, and a powerball ticket. It's fun to dream. Sigh.
Today’s Question:
Does your home have doorstops (mounted or wedge) both. -or do you use items for that purpose ? LINK ---> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doorstop
Bonus:
Have you ever-
worn a helmet ? a cycling helmet yes.
made a candle ? when I was in school.
set off a backyard rocket ? yes.
had to abandon a vehicle mid-journey ? a few times after they broke down.
used an ejector seat/floatation cushion/parachute ? parachute skydiving yes.
had a limb in traction ? my back.
Just for Fun:
Have you ever studied and/or communicated using-
smoke signals ? I've flirted in smoking areas... does that count?
semaphore (waving flags on sticks) ? no.
Morse Code ? when I was a kid all forgotten now.
Have you seen the British mystery series “Inspector Morse” (or read the books by Colin Dexter) ? Yes but not in a long time.
Thanks for the Questions Cloven, I hope you're all having a good day.
Posting early because there's a gusty wind outside, with risk for power outages in area
^Fortunately, didn't lose power, though couldn't be sure of that when I was posting the thread-figured better safe than sorry !
Today’s Question:
Does your home have doorstops (mounted or wedge)-or do you use items for that purpose ? There are couple mounted (on wall) ones in apt. but they're decrepit & broken,
so I have objects placed there to block door from banging into wall.
Extra Credit:
Do you know how to use-
a slide rule ? a graphing calculator ? ^Neither of the above-they were things I'd heard of while in school back in the 1980s, though.
Bonus:
Have you ever-
worn a helmet ?
made a candle ?
set off a backyard rocket ?
had to abandon a vehicle mid-journey ?
used an ejector seat/floatation cushion/parachute ?
had a limb in traction ?
^None of the above
Just for Fun:
Have you ever studied and/or communicated using-
smoke signals ?
semaphore (waving flags on sticks) ?
Morse Code ?
^No
Have you seen the British mystery series “Inspector Morse” (or read the books by Colin Dexter) ?
^Yes, watched all the episodes multiple times.
Theme song uses Morse code in the notes, which apparently on occasion revealed clue about "whodunnit".
Today’s Question: Does your home have doorstops (mounted or wedge)-or do you use items for that purpose? I only have one doorstop that I use for a bedroom door that won't stay open. The stop is a fabric chicken stuffed with some sort of heavy stuffing. It's cure and works really well.
Extra Credit: Do you know how to use- a slide rule? Yes. I used a slide rule in math class in 5th and 6th grade. I still have it and still remember how to use it. a graphing calculator? I'd never heard of this before.
Bonus: Have you ever- worn a helmet? Yes, many times. I had a boyfriend for about 6 years in the 1970s and he had a motorcycle. We rode the bike frequently. Funny that this would come up now. Last week I finally gave away my old helmet. made a candle? Yes. I used to be very much into candle making. I made so many, and such large ones, that I bought wax in 55-lb boxes. They contained 5 11-lb slabs. I miss candle making. I was pretty good at it. set off a backyard rocket? Nope. had to abandon a vehicle mid-journey? Nope. I've had automotive breakdowns but never had to abandon the vehicle. used an ejector seat/floatation cushion/parachute? Nope. had a limb in traction? Nope.
Just for Fun: Have you ever studied and/or communicated using- smoke signals? Haha - nope. semaphore (waving flags on sticks)? Did this in Girl Scouts. Morse Code? Did this in 5th grade class. Have you seen the British mystery series “Inspector Morse” (or read the books by Colin Dexter)? Nope.
Today’s Word: emolument /iˈmälyəmənt/ (n.): Wages, payment, salary, compensation for work done. My weekly emolument is on Wednesdays.
Today Is: Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day I used to know mine, but have forgotten it. National Hot Toddy Day German Apples Day (Germany) I've never had a German apple. I wonder if they're shipped to the US.
Better late than never! I hope everyone had a great Monday.
