Thalidomide was not approved in the US in the 1960s. It was sold OTC in Germany, where the majority of the "Thalidomide babies" were born. It is now approved in the US for the treatment of leprosy.
I remember the concern about polio in the early 50s. Several kids I went to school with had gotten it.
Then there was a med prescribed to pregnant women that, it was learned, caused birth defects. Missed that one as my mother refused any and all meds while pregnant. (Thanks, Mom)
The good ol' days weren't all good.
It's FDA approved for the treatment of leprosy and some other disease...which I can't remember.
One of the chemists who developed it gave it to his daughter for morning sickness when she was pregnant. I guess she took a lot of it, because her child was seriously affected and didn't live for very long. It was one of the worst cases ever followed, studied.

There are C-D members who are in their 90s. I'm not one of them...yet. You don't have to be elderly, though, to remember the thalidomide tragedy. Some of them are still with us.

Sometimes our memories are a bit faulty. The Thalidomide tragedy did not happen in the US. There were 17 cases in the US. There were about 10,000 in Germany. A few people in the US got samples, or like Sherri Finkbine, got their medication from some other country. It was sold by prescription in Canada. https://thalidomide.ca/en/the-canadian-tragedy/ http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-15536544
