I remember stations selling "White" gas. Aviation type fuel without lead. 100 octane.

Thalidomide was not approved in the US in the 1960s. It was sold OTC in Germany, where the majority of the "Thalidomide babies" were born. It is now approved in the US for the treatment of leprosy.

Then there was a med prescribed to pregnant women that, it was learned, caused birth defects. Missed that one as my mother refused any and all meds while pregnant. (Thanks, Mom)

The good ol' days weren't all good.
It's FDA approved for the treatment of leprosy and some other disease...which I can't remember.

One of the chemists who developed it gave it to his daughter for morning sickness when she was pregnant. I guess she took a lot of it, because her child was seriously affected and didn't live for very long. It was one of the worst cases ever followed, studied.

I remember when people bought or built houses to live in forever. Resale was not considered.

I remember if we left our car lights on by mistake, any stranger passing by would open the car door and turn off our car lights.

Thalidomide was not approved in the US until 2006 for leprosy and cancer, and is highly controlled. So to say "I'm so old I remember Thalidomide babies" is incorrect if one lives in the US. I do, just barely, remember the controversy over Thalidomide in the 60s. A US woman, Sherry Finkbine, took some Thalidomide while pregnant that she got from Europe, then wanted an abortion.

Thanks for the info. Nobody said they remembered thalidomide babies. Fortunately. Just remember hearing about it.

I remember stockings with a seam up the back. And how pany hose was a vast improvement over garter belts.

Also remember stockings only being worn for special occasions. Socks for every day wear.

I remember:

when kids could walk to school and roam the neighborhood safely

seat belts were rare, as were car seats for kids

you went to the school in your own neighborhood with all the other neighborhood kids

telephone party lines

playing in the playground under the screen in your pajamas at the drive-in movies

you could smoke just about anywhere

girls weren't allowed to wear pants to school

stores didn't put out Christmas stuff until after Thanksgiving

the Fuller Brush man and the Avon lady

there were no color televisions

nothing had to be "sealed for your protection"

There are C-D members who are in their 90s. I'm not one of them...yet. You don't have to be elderly, though, to remember the thalidomide tragedy. Some of them are still with us.

Sometimes our memories are a bit faulty. The Thalidomide tragedy did not happen in the US. There were 17 cases in the US. There were about 10,000 in Germany. A few people in the US got samples, or like Sherri Finkbine, got their medication from some other country. It was sold by prescription in Canada.
