I remember when some girls at school were making a fuss outside our classroom door, and Donna went out to see what was the matter. It was then that she learned about the tragic accident that killed her boyfriend, Ritchie Valens, along with The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly.
As for Mr. Holly, I have "The Buddy Holly Story" album, and could not pick a favorite from among those 12 great songs. The album cover was destroyed years ago by my dog, perhaps in retaliation for having his ears assaulted by "Rave On" at full volume.
I was 14 1/2. I liked it a lot but it was overplayed, and I couldn't listen to it again until the early 1980's. The song was released as a single in late 1971, album earlier in 1971.
If you mean Maria Holly, "the widowed bride" in McLean's song, I had heard she's finally turning loose some of the rights surrounding Buddy Holly's name and that she had remarried and lived at Dallas.
Lol! I doubt I cried. I was much too young to know who Holly was. I'm sure my older sister did though.
Was she old enough to drive her Chevy to the levee? Was it dry? Or did she drink whiskey and rye? I was going on two when he died.
My mother was too lazy to get up so my brother and I had to ride bikes several miles each way to attend very early morning swim team practice.
My parents were all too happy to drive me places. I resisted that mightily, and we had a big argument about that in late 1971 and again in spring 1972 as to both night biking from the high school about 4 miles away, and walking home across the golf course at night. I won the discussion the next academic year, as my Dad sickened and ultimately passed away in early 1973. I loved the freedom of going to "coffee house entertainment" at the YMHA or the high school, and having the freedom to bike home, and sing my head off, with no one minding my out of tune voice. I sang "Mr. Tambourine Man" a lot of the time.

I had to look it up but "Donna" was Donna Ludwig of San Fernando High School?

I was just reading the thread about when you first drank coffee and thought, I'm so old I remember when my opinion and a dime would buy you a cup of coffee. I doubt a dime would now buy the cup.
Was the farm a snow-covered field in Clear Lake, Iowa (link)?
