I am so old I remember when you could drive for hours in New Mexico and not encounter another vehicle after dark. I also remember when many of the State's "highways" were still unpaved and when only bits and pieces of the interstate highway system could be found inside the State.
I'm also old enough to know why radiator water bags were made of porous canvas or duck material. I've only heard stories of a time of travelling in the desert Southwest when knowing the location of running streams along your route could be more important that knowing the location of a gas station.
