Mainebrokerman spurned this topic so I thought before we got carried away and got busted for being off-topic, I would open a new thread. He mentioned in another thread about how songs take him back to times in his life and how even though smell is thought to be the strongest sense associated with memory, that he felt songs were right up there. I have to agree. So many songs take me back to different times and events in my life. Chicago-Color My World was playing during my very first romantic encounter of an adult experience...Ah, I'll never forget ole whats-her-name. Eric Clapton-Layla..camping with my dad in Kentucky. So many others...I love music!
Smells take me back too. I can't ever smell fresh cut wood without thinking of my grandfathers house in Kentucky and the woodpile out back. Fresh home-made bread, fresh outside-dried sheets, chocolate pie in the oven...ahhh memories of an innocent childhood. Mace, pot, formaldehyde, cigarette smoke=1st floor by the chemistry labs in High School...yeah, it was a rough place, but I learned a lot about street sense there.
i have to admit,,i dont read much stephen king,,tho i like most of his movies.
as far as songs go,,,i grew up in the 70's listening to a.m. music (now called "oldies") i love classic rock,,and many now called "Oldies" ..
hearing or thinking of an old song,,often conjures up ,,nostalgic memories,,, as in the song,,hitchin a ride, by vanity fair,,i remember that as if it were yesterday,,playing on the cars radio,,i was 8-9 years old,,,heading for the beach at the lake,, same with hundreds of others,
someone asked me a week ago,,if i remembered being 7....i thought about it,,the grade i was in,,friends,, i had a few memories,yet when i remembered the music,,such as american pie (don mcclean) i had many more memories,,
being in our backyard,,with an old transistor radio,,,playing kick the can,,and staying overnight in a tent,etc.,(the song was constantly on the radio)
my 14th summer,,,i remember distinctly,,,driving with my sister,,listening to "boston" her fav band,, now when i hear it,,,i do harken back to the "days"
they say "smell" is the strongest sense associated with memory,,,,but hearing is right up there too (for me)

There was a guy that had a 65 Chevy SS that we hung out with and he would put The Guess Who and Grass Roots in the 8-track and we would cruise out in the country drinking Boones Farm...we were stupid, I know but we sure laughed a lot and whenever I hear anything by those 2 old groups, I think about that delicious, (NOT), beverage and the good times.
Pot and a Lagerfeld cologne both bring back very good memories- from different times of my life. Bacon, because when my folks were really getting along we'd have nice breakfasts on weekends.
Bus exhaust because when we would visit my grandmother in Philly, we'd go out on the town at night and it was always so special and fancy. Chanel No. 5 and Calgon Bouquet was what my other grandmother's house smelled like and she and my grandfather were awsome.
Clean sweat because that is how my husband smelled when he came home from work. And Johnson & Johnson baby lotion reminds me of my first child and I loved staying home and being with him.

I had to laugh when I read this because I always used the line, "There is a HUGE difference in clean sweat and dirty sweat", back when I played basketball and softball. I would always take a shower before and after games because of that. People would ask me why I would take a shower when I knew that I was going to work up a sweat and I would tell them that I just wish everyone would do the same. I still would not even think about going out in public before cleaning up. I used to wear Lagerfeld a long time ago, now I use Paul Sabastion exclusively. I like the aroma of Red and Red Door on women, but really like anything soft and clean smelling.

I used Red Door for years. That brings back memories, as well. Now I use a honey cologne by L'Occitane, which is barely noticable and, when I want to be more noticable, I like Euphoria by Calvin Klein. But I spray it in the air and walk through it so it isn't overpowering. I'd prefer for someone to turn their head and wonder what they just smelled, than for them to wonder who it is that they smell!

Hmmm, I never knew you women did that. Learn something new everytime I come in here. Too bad some of those people in the elevator from the most embarrassing moment thread didn't have a vial of that to spritz in the air, huh?

i woke last night to the sound of thunder, how far off i sat and wondered, started humming a song from ninteen sixty-two, aint it funny how the night moves....

my grandmother,,use to make date-filled cookies, and pies,love the smell of both,,,,love the smell of a pine tree,,,,being a christmas tree,
on the rare occassion our family gets together,,,,we have some old home movies,,,funny to see the old hairstyles,,,and it seems ,,,everytime we see someones mother,,,she's hanging on to a cigarrette in one hand has a kid in the other,,,,and the father/grandfathers always had a drink in thier hands,,,,

Boones Farm- teenage memories of staking out 7-11s and waiting for an "of age" guy to come along to buy it for us. Cost about a buck a bottle. And of chugging it from the bottle and throwing it up out the car window- that Strawberry Hill left such a nasty streak down the side of the car...explain that to the folks.
Now the music you mentioned makes me want to go shoot pool and drink beer. Eight ball anyone? Play ya for beers!

Ah yes...I saw they still sell Boones Farm, can you believe it? I'll pass on it now though, I remember the killer hangovers to this day. Great selection of musical artists, MBM, but you left out Kansas, Moody Blues and Blue Oyster Cult....love them all. I work with a guy that partied with Seger back in the day. He went up to Detroit to another concert, , (The MC5 maybe??), and afterwards went to a party and there was Bob Seger. He said Seger was so down to earth and just one of the boys. Class act indeed.
I remember when McCartney first released the LP, Ram, (with Wings). I was over at a friends house and his girlfriend and he were in the living room, and I was awaiting mine to arrive in another room where the stereo was at. I saw the LP there and put it on. Little did I know they were in the living room on the couch making out, just as a song from that LP started playing and the words were, "Do you really love me or is this the only thing you want me for"...he wanted to choke me because he said as soon as that played, his girlfriend straightened out and the ice was on. When my girl showed up, Nights in White Satin was played.
