I have a friend that chose Harper Lee for the same reason.......despite the fact that Harper Lee's full name is Nelle Harper Lee. Nelle being her grandmother's name Ellen, spelled backwards.
I'm just stymied as to why someone would want to give a little girl a name like that, famous author or not. To each their own, but it just doesn't have a nice sound, IMO. Too close to "harpy".
Tripp is an old English noble name. It has been around for EVER.
Are the Palin's English nobles?
The actual reason for the use of "Trip", like "Trey", by upper class people is as a nick name for the third, to avoid confusion.
When grandfather is Robert and goes by "Bob", son is Robert and goes by "Robb" or "Bert", grandson is also named Robert, but in attempt to avoid confusion "Trip" or "Trey" are sometimes used.
It is a fading practice among the upper classes both here and in Great Britain , since it is now a "Soap", name and has been picked up by common folks.

We have friends who just named their daughter Harper ...... they are kind of a mix of hippy dippy and ultra religious ..... personally I don't mind the name at all
Where I fall on this is pick a name that works for you while still being fair to the kid and their future ... they will have to live with it beyond your whim or moment in time
I care not about trends - if something becomes popular at any given moment it's usually because there is a broadened awareness of that name at any given time so more people are aware of it
I also have a friend who has an addison, the only other boy that my sitter watches is a declan
The whole thread is basically for the OP to vent about names that he thinks are too "trendy" or "stupid" and the obviously stupid parents behind those names ..... which is funny from a poster who named their kid a trendy name
My name was very common in the area I grew up ... two of my best friends in my grade had the same exact name ..... never was a problem and where I live now the name is much less common (although my brother in law and sister in laws husband both carry the same name)
We didn't know the gender of our 2nd child .... we had 3 boys and 3 girls names ready ..... easily narrowed it down to a girls name we liked .... if a boy we had a middle name set that is a family legacy, so we needed something that we liked that would work with the middle and last name ..... 1 name was "trendy" 2 were not ...... we narrowed down to the trendy name and the not trendy name
After my son was born we spent about a half hour trying to figure out what name to settle on and we kept coming back to the trendy name .... there are times I sometimes think we should have gone the other way, but overall I think the name fits really well ....... it was not even considered because it was trendy - in fact I had no reference point to the name as far as kids I knew with the name, tv characters, etc ....... but it was definitely known and trendy
I knew that some dopes would say we were following the trend, but really didn't care - our kid, our name, our reasons .... simple as that
Funny story about names... A long time ago, I worked with a young woman named "Mercedes". Her sister's name was Porsha. There was another sister with a "car" name but I can't remember what it was. It turned out their mother gave ALL her children "car" names (and there were several more children, not just the 3 I mentioned)

I'd also read somewhere that "Nell" is a diminution of "mine Ellen," which is also where we get Ned as a nickname for Edward ("mine Edward") and Nan ("mine Anne")

Yes, I found that amusing also. Eh, it gave the rest of us the opportunity to state our preferences.

And that's really all that matters.
My own name screams out "I was born in the late 1950s!"
