This is an oft discussed topic in the context of parenting. I found this article interesting, particularly from the perspective that many parents who are vehemently opposed to video games are not well informed regarding their content.

I’m powerless over the “change is threatening mindset,” but I can say with absolutely certainty that it is misplaced with respect to video games and video gaming. Consider that video games have been with us for about 30 years, and in that time children have been born, grown up and become productive members of society.

I'm with the author on this one. Video games have been around for many decades, and the same exact arguments have been parroted throughout that time. I don't think there is any inherent harm in video games. However, I do think there can be a problem with too much video game time. Parents just need to be informed as to what games their children are playing, and be able to set reasonable limits.

I don't think video games are bad for anyone, within moderation. The one time when I really do disapprove of video games is when an adult is playing them to the extent that he doesn't have time to play with his kids, mow his yard, etc.

As with any aspect of parenting, moderation is key.

The exact same thing could be said of a child who plays them to the extent that he doesn't have time to play with his friends/family, do his chores, etc.

But what about the super violent games which show heads being blown off and blood and gore? Aren't they inappropriate for kids? I think they can numb some kids to the horror of violence and it's repercussions.

Wouldn't common sense parenting apply? That would be the same as saying all movies are bad for kids because "Saw" is terrifying? There are age appropriate ratings for video games just like for movies and television shows. "R" rated movies are not appropriate for young children, and neither are "Mature" or "Adult Only" video games.Rating categories, content descriptors, and interactive elements from ESRB

Not all games are super violent games. You wouldn't take a 10 year old to see a bloody, gory movie so why would you allow him to play a super violent video game? There are plenty of video games that are 100% appropriate for kids. Parents just have to act like parents and figure out which games are appropriate for their kids. It isn't that difficult.

I think this is a fantastic article. I don't necessarily want my kids to have the childhood I had. During my childhood I had to constantly apologize for liking sports and disliking playing house and other traditional girly play. I like that things have changed. Video games are just entertainment.

Video games are only as harmful to children as you let them be.
