What time does he wake up? Doesn't sound crazy to me. My 6 1/2 year old needs 11 hours sleep. She is in bed by 7pm reading, is asleep by 8, wakes up at 7. If she needed to wake up at 6, then she'd absolutely be asleep by 7pm. Good for your friend for having a schedule for the child. Nobody wants a sleep deprived child around.
She used to make me go to bed at that age at 8PM - maybe even 7:30 (so she could watch her westerns undisturbed). I'd be awake at 4 AM and used to take walks around the house (on tiptoe of course) and look out the windows. I knew which neighbors lights came on at what time. It was quite consistent. Sorta memorized the pattern - like a night watchman I guess. One morning, the D'Amicos (across the street) lights did not come on at 4:30 as usual. I was in a panic (I think I had just learned the word "overslept.") So what did I do? Woke up the parents to tell them the D'Amicos overslept. In her half asleep fog, she got on the phone to tell them they overslept and it turned out the man took the day off because they had to do something that day. They were furious with her for waking them up. She was even more furious with me! Threatened to take me to a psychiatrist.
That does seem extremely early...guess Im a horrible parent since my 2 year old goes to bed at 930. I could understand 830-900, but putting them to bed that early seems like you just dont want to be bothered to spend time with them and would rather have "me" time....but like everyone says, to each his own.

My dad had a job with early hours and a very long commute. He was home by 4:00 pm. And hungry so we ate at 4:30. Together. As a family. As I recall our bedtime was 7:30 to 8:00. If we weren't sleepy we read comic books. (My father had a physically and mentally demanding job and he was often asleep before we were.)
Some of our neighbors worked in the film and TV industry. The call to be on-set was 5 to 6:00 am. (It still is.) Most of Los Angeles was in bed by nine when I was a kid because L.A. was an industry-centered town and people had to be up and on the job before the sun came up.
Not everyone works a 9-5 job and deciding people can't be bothered with their kids because they put them to bed early seems quite presumptuous to me.

Yes, I'm quite happy to have my 1 & 3.5 year old in bed by 7pm and spend 2 hours alone with my husband.
My kids will cope quite well only seeing their dad 5-7pm every night and then on weekends. Our 1-3 hours of alone time at night means we get plenty of sex, dinners alone, and romantic couch snuggles despite being exhausted daily with a baby and an autistic preschooler. A lot of parents in our shoes are on the verge of divorce. We on the other hand, are as sappy as a pair of teenagers.
When my son was younger his bed time was 7:30 PM sharp. He's 9 now and has to be in bed by 8:30 PM and he usually falls asleep my 9:00 PM. Even then he has a hard time waking up most mornings (which is at 6:00 AM). As much as the OP doesn't understand putting kids to be early, I don't understand the parents who let their kids go to bed whenever they want and let them out to play after 8:00 PM. Kids need their sleep or at the least enough downtime to function. But, to each their own I suppose.
I didn't read every page. I am amazed that anyone would put their kids to bed that early. I am the dad of 6, with 5 still at home and the youngest is 7. Last night we were at the skating rink so my daughter could hang out with friends from school. They skate every tuesday night till 8:30. During the week after home work is done the kids will either ride their bikes help me take the dog for a walk, or play video games and that could be till 6 or 6:30. Our kids also read after they watch some TV. The school wants them to read for 20 to 30 minutes a day. Then they have to get ready for bed, take a bath or what have you. The kids are in bed by 8:30 or 9pm.
I would say that a parent that puts the kids to bed earlier may not want to spend time with their kids.

So kids watching TV or playing video games falls under the category of you spending time with them? Interesting....
Apparently my husband's 1-2 straight hours of floor play with his kids at 5-6pm (baby) or 7pm (older child) is not wanting to see them. We should put them in front of a video game until 8-9pm for more quality time, LOL.
