Lol, oh man people are so over-reactionary for the wrong reasons these days.
I lock my kids in the car with the engine running with AC on all the time. They prefer it. Ford smart access FTW!
My kids are safely locked in the car nice and cool and playing whatever electronic device or drawing listening to music. Anyone messes with the car I will know about it instantly. I've left them in for up to 4 minutes. Usually they are in visual range. Most the time I just leave them at home alone.
This is what I have done at times as well (not often, and I can't think of a recent example off the top of my head, but I know I've done it). My SUV has keyless entry, so if the key fab isn't super close to the vehicle, the car can't be shifted out of park. I leave the car locked but running with my kid(s) safely secured in their 5-point harness car seats. As they are both still rear-facing, they usually don't even notice I'm gone. So, even if my one-minute errand turns into 4 minutes, the vehicle interior temperature remains stable, the kids can't get out of their seats, the doors are locked...

Make sure you don't have a carbon monoxide leak. I'm not sure how you do this, but some people die from staying inside a running car even if the tailpipe is clear. Just FYI.
If you have an older vehicle this may be a bigger concern than a newer one.
So people die just walking outside their home. No need to put everyone in a bubble because of what COULD happen.
