Women don't have to worry about paying though. Its all about the pictures.

12% long term would be more risk than most of us would want to take on ,especially today with cash and bonds producing very little .

markets have averaged 9% or so the last 10 yrs,20 years and 30 years with the worst 20 year period over the last 40 years returning 7%.

I've tried both.

Had better luck on the free ones.

As to cooking:

I made Jambalaya last night, I'll probably make Red Beans and Rice today.

Frieze portions of it, that's over 20 meals which just need to be heated up.

It's easy to do this on the weekends or some evening when you feel like it and rotate through...

Burning a chunk of Beef once a week,or something else easy makes relatively easy to eat at home.

(Crockpot helps too)

-Reminds me, I need to throw a deer roast into it next couple days...

There are jobs out there. You have to keep looking.

While I do sympatize with the people who are/were broke due to unfortunate circumstances but there is no excuse for someone who did not budget their finances and did not save for a rainy day fund.

If you live below your means then you should not have any issues.

I believe before the depression I would agree with you but with the cost of everything going up and wages stagnant its simply not the case anymore for most people.

All it takes is one trip to the ER or one illness or a major breakdown with your car, home repair etc and your SOL.

The recession has forced many people to cut corners but you can only cut so much.

I myslef have always lived within my means and i am thankful I have a job and so does my wife.

Kids are out of the house
If you had a job loss and children mixed in with any of the scenario's above you would be in for.

Well, do you really want to pay someone to buy a date?

How much was the debt? Were they all with one creditor?

It turned out for me I was neglecting a lot of things in my life that were hurting my ability to earn money. I had problems with confidence. I had to get over a lot of fears. I think my experience with being broke/in debt had a lot to do with overcoming fear in various forms...which is probably true for most people. It helped that I came from a family that always emphasized the importance of saving and avoiding debt (other than a reasonable mortgage). I initially abandoned those values, but I since I was taught that value system, I kind of knew what I had to do.

And yes, I still find it shocking that so many people are broke. Once I started earning a half decent income, I couldn't imagine not saving any money.
