But WHY do you believe that you have to keep up with the Jones's? I'm quite comfortable living a minimalist lifestyle for now.
If I never get that new Mercedes Benz or have the biggest McMansion, I will be okay.

Everyone does not do it and my ULTIMATE pet peeve is people who go out and sign on the dotted line for mortgages, cars, credit cards, etc. knowing they'll never be able to pay that money back. They aren't even worried about paying it back. I have debt too... a bit on a credit card, a student loan, but I'm paying it back every month and I'll keep doing it until it's paid off because I gave my word I would and my word means something to me. Not trying to be some kind of morality police, but it really peeves me when people don't own up to their debts. And buying stuff to look good to someone else is even worse than buying it to please yourself! And you're not fooling anyone. I have a friend who is always buying Coach purses, new cars, and posting the pictures on FB. She works in a factory and lives in a house the size of a cracker box. The only thing I think about people like that is how foolish they are.

So why use the credit cards to begin with? Just learn to limit yourself and have a bit of self-control. You don't need the x-box or the new Ipad.
I would solely use cash to prevent digging myself into a deeper hole. I would pay down my mortgage and my car. Focus on those. Your house will be your biggest asset.
Credit cards are a straight liability. And the interest on them if the balance carries over is only working against you.

i would like to think that am as rich as my credit card make me feel..... but the truth is am borrowing or getting a loan to go to mcdonalds....... or to buy that big screen tv.... and to do any thing esle....
why do we allow these credit companies to do this.... to us....we live way beyond our means cause they enable us.... i have a credit card limit of 25k, 15k, 18k,13, 9k....of course i have a really good credit score.......(car dealer even took a pic with me) lol
I'm sorry, don't you know how to say no?
I'm very old. I own one credit card. I use it a regularly and pay it off every month.
My limit is $3k. I need no more, in fact, I don't need that.
You choose to live beyond your means, it's all about choices.

What a sad family you choose to be part of.
You make your own life, you make your own choices.
You're obviously getting something out of this, so it's your choice to play.
BTW, your posts are ridiculously difficult to read.
Sometimes you have a 'rough' patch in life...unexpected loss of job, being caught without health insurance when a health issue arises...etc...credit is useful then, but as far as luxuries??? Only a foolish person goes uses credit for what isn't necessary to survive.

This drives me nuts as well. Some people are responsible with money and some aren't. Just today, my next-door neighbor saw me outside and said, "Do you have a minute? I want to show you what I bought!" He proceeded to pop into his house and come back out with a brand-new Martin guitar, saying he paid $3,500 for it. This neighbor and his wife are both spendthrifts and are terribly in debt. Collection agencies are constantly after them and call me frequently to try to get information about them. (I stay out of it.) The postman often delivers their mail to me in error, and much of it is notices from collection agencies. I have had shut-off warning tags hung on my door from the water company, intended for my neighbors because they never pay their water bill. (Unfortunately, my address is [similar to] 123 Main Street, and my neighbors' address is 123 1/2 Main Street. So I get a lot of mail intended for them.) I've never been late paying a bill in my life, even if I had to work 3 jobs to keep afloat during the leanest times. Yes, my neighbors spend money left and right and don't care at all that creditors are constantly after them. The wife has told me on more than one occasion that she's so tired of reading collection notices that she no longer opens the mail. How stupid is THAT? Yet, in the past few months this couple has purchased a new motorcycle, a $3,500 guitar, a new top-of-the-line Keurig coffee maker (which was delivered to my house in error), and she buys Longaberger baskets and Pampered Chef stuff all the time, plus expensive scrapbooking supplies. It makes me sick!
I guess this thread just got me to venting. I'm sick and tired of hearing people say they don't have any money, yet they buy all sorts of stuff that they don't NEED. When I decide to splurge on something, as I did recently with a new computer, I saved up for it and paid cash for it instead of running up a credit card bill. There are some exceptions, but, generally, my feeling is that if you have to charge it, you don't NEED it.
I have tons of credit available to me, and occasionally use a credit card, but I pay the balance in full when the statement comes. If I charge more than usual, such as at Christmastime, I may pay it off in two installments.
Running up credit card balances is a choice. No one forces you to live beyond your means.
