I'm 69 years old, not married, an income too low to file income taxes. I want to withdraw $4000 from a (fully vested) small old 401k from work as I have cancer and expenses. Living in AZ do you know how much taxes will be withheld by the Financial Institution?

If I recall correctly under $5k there is no withholding,

If there is you may be able to opt out of it (20%). If not you have to file a tax return to get it refunded to you.

There is a mandatory 20% federal income tax withholding and also depending on which state you live, mandatory state tax withholding may apply. Some states will allow you to opt out of state taxes so please check with your recordkeeper.
