Yes, I agree. If we're discussing absolute necessity, I'd agree that cooking at home is near certain to be cheaper than eating/taking out. But most aren't discussing absolute necessity here and, instead, are cooking, buying, ordering out things that they want to eat. This is where choice and preference come into the equation.

Oh yes, pets is a big one. I know a few people with “fur babies” that spend stupid money on the animals - premium pet food, vet bills, pet insurance etc. They all sure complain about their student loans though. Fur babies, ugh, can’t stand that term.

The broke people I know all splurge on personal items like nails, hair, or shopping. It's easy to excuse away your "retail therapy" to yourself. Or you can easily tell others that you "needed" it for XYZ reason.

However, I also think many (not all) truly broke people also engage in straight up reckless behavior. Terrible financial decisions like rolling upside down car loans into new loans and taking out payday loans; low work ethic, overspending, addictions, etc. I feel bad for anybody who is stuck being broke while being a perfectly good hardworking person. Nobody wants that. Finance is a skill that needs to be taught. It's affected my family as far back as I can track and I'm an exception.

For sure! I won't have more kids because they are expensive. Some people think dogs are a right. Still, I'd rather a dog be loved at a personal level than housed in a shelter... so hard to judge. I know some broke people who paid for theirs though.

My childfree, dog-loving daughter sent me a hilarious meme calling human children "skindogs".

I think the "spend beyond means" is just American way to live. Some broken people don't plan for future, they enjoy their life now, and "to hell with later".
I happen to knew someone with that mentality.
They are enabled to live such life. Credit cards, loans approvals make such life possible. And when the SHTF - they just file for bankruptcy. No real consequences for them - they didn't have any assets to begin with, or good credit history...

I always had money for wine no matter how poor I was. 7.5 an hour or 38 an hour. No difference lol. Priorities.

Jewelry and tattoos.

My goodness, broke people love them some gaudy jewelry and tattoos. Jewelry stores and tattoo parlors would be out of business if it wasn't for broke people.
