My 22yr old daughter has just moved to No. Marshall st by Temple U. Wondering just how much I should be worrying about her safety?

Hold on tight, Tom.. Seton- I would not walk down there in the daylight..Very bad area.. Sorry to say. I'm am sure you will get people here who will say that its a fine area but its not true. I think this is in the 19140 zip code and here are the crime stats there.

I think it's in: 19122

I dunno, they have 37,696. They can't all be crime victims. Students are bound to have ways of dealing with their rougher surroundings. I should leave it to Philly folks from here.

When was the last time, if ever, that you were there?

just moved from the Temple area to Center City after four years of school there and I will agree with Frank that Marshal is CERTAINLY not a great area. All students are usually west of the train tracks. The big off campus student area is between Broad St, 19th street, Diamond St and Masters street.

If she is a Temple student I would try to get her in the area where most of the students live where it is MUCH safer and patrolled by a ton of cops. either that or on campus, that should give you some peace of mind because she will be safe in the areas I suggested and surrounded by students and decent working class people. The area around Marshall has a VERY big African American and Hispanic community that will welcome them with open arms but it is certainly not the prettiest area. go further west past 5th street and you are in a very bad area. go further north past diamond and again you are in a very bad area.

North Philly is not one of best areas of the city so my advice would be

1. make sure she is always aware of her surroundings

2. Don't walk alone at night time after 10pm

3. Avoid the subway if she can and catch Broad street bus instead

Since she is at Temple she will be taking the Subway from the Cecil B. Moore stop which is as safe as they come.

I don't recommend using the subway at all when she can catch the Broad street bus.
