Best cheesesteak in Philly? (Reading, Hatboro: 2014, home, assess)

Max's on Germantown Ave near Broad & Erie. It's a bit out of the way, but it is by far the best cheesesteak I've ever had.

They don't have a website, but they have excellent reviews on Yelp.

Fair but honestly is this an area a one-day traveler from outside would likely want to venture into...

What's not to understand? They all taste the same. It is commonly understood that the most important ingredient in a cheesesteak is the roll. Any place in Philadelphia that wants to serve a cheesesteak understands this and make sure they serve it on the right roll, including all the major tourist joints. In fact most of them serve rolls from either sarcones or amarosos, so most cheesesteaks in Philadelphia are literally served on the exact same bread. From there they are all you using basically the same meat and same types of cheese and limited toppings. Aside from minor variations in preparation they really do all basically taste the same.

Sure there are outliers, places that do something different, but the for the most part the basic cheesesteak in Philadelphia is virtually the same no matter where you get it.

It's a decent enough sandwich but there a far better sandwiches to be had in Philadelphia.

We both know that is false. Some places use differen types of cheese or meat or bread so its no way they can all taste the same.

Ahh I skipped over the one-day part. Definitely not the place to go if you're only in the city for a day.

Not really the cheesesteak IMO-(kind of agree with phillies2011 assessment that the roll is most important and most all places in Philly use good rolls), but the Chicken Cheesesteak at Ishkabibbles is the best I've had-real chunks of quality chicken.

For the OP, If you're doing the touristy thing I'd just go straight to The Reading Terminal Market for a hot roast pork/provolone/broccoli rabe at Tommy Dinic's (but John's is better).

Oh please - how in the world do you compare the cotton texture of an Amarosos roll to the crisp perfection of a roll from Sarcones? They are in no way the exact same bread. Seeing a sign in a sandwich shop "boasting" their bread comes from Amarosos send me running the other way.
