I based it on that! I was searching for a nice part of the town having to work in the North of Phoenix, and area around PV Mall is where I decided on. Its nice out here! I moved from Boston, so not as "walkable" as Boston/Cambridge of course, but comparatively a lot better than any other places in the North of Phoenix.
I live in the PV Mall area and to call it walkable would be a big, big stretch. Having things within walking distance (which is what Walkscore measures) does not mean the built environment supports pedestrian activity. Who wants to walk along Cactus with six lanes of traffic blowing past you at 50mph? And then slowly make my way across a giant parking lot to get where I need to go? It's car country up here, for sure.

I agree completely. The only walkable area near PV Mall is the interior of PV Mall.

And the suburbia uber alles mentality that rules up there doesn't make it any easier. We lived in the subdivision behind the Albertson's at Tatum and Greenway. When it was being built I was pleased since one of the neighborhood streets ended at what was to be their parking lot. Cool, I thought, we can walk to the store. The neighborhood decided that they wanted that street walled off to keep "undesirables" out of the neighborhood. That added more than a quarter mile, most of it along Greenway, to the walk.

Locally-owned shops, Markets, Museums, artsy, some Nightlife????? Downtown Phx. has most of that - just not a whole lot of Nightlife but there is some if you know where to look.

I don't recommend N. Scottsdale for what you're looking for. Downtown Scottsdale around the Waterfront or Fashion Mall - or maybe Old-Town would be more of your thing.

Sounds like Downtown Phx. might be what the o.p. is looking for.

It is a flying sculpture at downtown Phoenix' Civic Space Park. It was created by Janet Echelman and is named "Her Secret is Patience." Recalling the beauty and slow exposure of a cactus blossom or a growing monsoon thunderhead before moving into the valley to wreak havoc!

Scottsdale is pleasing to the eye but too pricey for the average person, especially anywhere north of the Downtown area. Even central Phoenix has pockets of affordable lofts and apartments that are in safe areas.
