i'm looking into a future move from minneapolis, mn to the phoenix area. i'm a twenty-two year old female just looking to explore and try something new. a friend of mine who used to live there (and plans on moving back) suggested i look into the areas of central historic phoenix and south scottsdale. can someone tell me about each of them?

You might enjoy looking at the "stories from old time residents' thread at the top of the Phoenix forum, there are a lot of pictures and stories there from, among others, a poster named Roosevelt who is a great resource about historic Phoenix.

I don't know what your friend means by south Scottsdale. Scottsdale runs so far north now that the Old Town district is pretty far south, and that's a nice area. True south Scottsdale (let's say south of Thomas, or perhaps Oak St, is nothing special, and is a little sketchy in some areas. I used to live in both Phoenix and Scottsdale, and of those two areas you mention, I'd pick Phoenix.

Which historic district are you interested in?

As for South Scottsdale, it can be hit or miss. Yes there are run down looking streets in Scottsdale.

About the only truly skanky parts IMHO of S Scottsdale would either be Belleview St (directly S of Skysong AKA the old Los Arcos Mall location) or the enclave between Thomas/64th St/Indian School/68th St.

Both areas are on the rebound. South Scottsdale can be "iffy", but downtown Scottsdale is still the place to be and the proximity to ASU helps.

Actually you might consider the near north in Phoenix around Central and Indian School. Very trendy, up and coming, easy access to light rail.

Of course Tempe near ASU is great for the younger crowd.

Anywhere close to light rail has a bright future.
