There's always Maricopa city, you can get a great deal on a home there and the commute into the city is rather short. Also Queen Creek, Surprise as mentioned above and far East Mesa/West Phoenix. All are pretty nice, cheap housing, decent areas.

With all due respect, Maricopa City is not a "rather short" commute to Phoenix. Most people would not agree that Queen Creek is reasonable commuting distance either. Surprise and Far East Mesa - maybe for some, but not for most.

I lived in Far East Mesa and commuted to Raintree Road in North Scottsdale for several years, so a longer commute (40-60 minutes depending on traffic) is something that I adjusted to. But only realized how stressful it was after I retired.

What are your fears, hughesbb, and maybe we can break those down for you? We have done lake living in MI, coastal CA and currently in Fountain Hills. To live in downtown Phoenix or raise a family there is not our cup of tea but for work...sure. We prefer the small town feeling of FH and love our scenary, nature, neighboring city lights views...just close enough for the amenities but just far enough away to have the neighborhood feeling of knowing your neighbors as they pass by for their walks with dogs and/or strollers in tow and a friendly "Hello!".
