Hobo Joe's Coffee shops! Sambo's was certainly the most offensive name for a chain of coffee shops, but how non-PC was a chain named after homeless people?

They had a statue of Hobo Joe out front. The chain is long gone, but there is still one Hobo Joe statue remaining - in Goodyear, of all places on the corner of Cemetery Road and Monroe. Check it out:

Ah, but the hoboes from those days, and for decades before, were a whole different category of "homeless" person. They were, or were made to seem, homeless by choice, riding the rails from town to town, asking for handouts from friendly folks. They were portrayed in a way that was oddly positive, (and if you read the menus at Hobo Joe's, they went along with that characterization).

As an aside, Herb Applegate ran the Hobo Joe's here. I went to grade school with two of his kids. Really nice folks. I used to like to go to the one in downtown Scottsdale once in a while when we could go off campus in high school. Nice memories.
