just a bit off topic, but that Youtube scene swooping right into the Westward Ho apparently without a change of camera was seemingly seamless......and very cool....

did anybody see a "seam" or know how they did this?

Not sure about Hitchcock's camera technique (apparently just very careful dissolves), but that's not the Westward Ho, it's the Heard Building, which had an antenna similar to the Westward Ho's back then.

I don't think Hitchcock had anything to do with that Psycho movie.

Alfred Hitchcock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Psycho (1960 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Psycho (1998 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's been a while since I've seen Hitchcock's Psycho, but, as I recall, the Phoenix scene at the beginning is not nearly so "seamless".

Sorry - I didn't look at the clip to see it was from the remake and thought you were talking about the original. Lots of people think the building in the original was the Westward Ho because of the antenna.

I moved here in 1971 and remember Lincoln Drive was jsut 2 lanes and my cousins son called it the "Whee" rd because it was hilly not flat like it is now. I also rmember the big rains in winter/spring of '72/'73 and watching crazy people tubing down Hayden Rd in the flood water before they put in the greenbelt. Kush was coach at ASU and we used to be able to climb up the buttes to party and watch the games...times gone by

Good points AZ Bear, however I do believe he is right. Thats Murphy Park across the street. That building has undergone boatloads of renovations over the years. Here are 3 more views of it.

BTW It was originally called The Gillett Building.

Yet another film made in Phoenix:

I was watching the classic 1953 George Pal production of "War of the Worlds" - in the "making of" featurette, they mention the first battle scene between the Martian war machines and the military (supposedly taking place outside Corona, California) was filmed just outside of Phoenix, with the Arizona National Guard playing the army. I wonder what part of town it was filmed in - it could be around what is Shea Road now...

I know "Oklahoma" (1955) was actually filmed in Arizona, around Elgin (the train station), Patagonia, Amado, and Nogales.

Those are neat old photos.
Is that the Westward Ho without an antenna? (in the second pic, looking north with Squaw Peak on the horizon)
