Their literature seems to state that it's any 60 minute period, but I can download my month's worth of demand usage that is broken out by clock hour, determine my highest demand per clock hour and it matches the demand charge on my bill.

That would be consistent an earlier post you made where you are "manipulating" it based on clock hours. Your intervention is giving you the expected result. I looked at a couple of old bills and they are close but not always the same with respect to billed KW peak and hour by hour KW peak.

But if my interpretation that it's by clock hour is wrong, there would be no point to running things for the second half of one hour and the first half of another, thereby not giving me the desired results. I think I'll call APS when I get a chance to clarify. It seems a bit misleading that all of their downloadable data is based on clock hours.

Either way, I'm pretty pleased that I have sub-$300 bills in the summer on a two-story house with a pool and enjoy 72 degrees during off-peak hours (sleep!).

Just talked to APS again and the rep said it's based on clock hours, so 12-1, 1-2, 2-3 etc. Their literature wording seems confusing but that supports what Detroit is seeing.

Great, thanks! You saved me a call. My evil thermostat manipulation is beneficial!

Haha I called back to ask a second person, you know, to fact check the first guy #toomuchtimeonmyhands

He said the same thing, it resets every hour. I even asked with an example...say you use 5kw between 12:00 - 1:00 and 4kw between 1:00 - 2:00, then the Demand would be 5kW, makes sense. But what if you use 5kW between 12:30 - 1:00 and 4kw between 1:00 - 1:30, would it still be 5kw or would it be 9kw since its a 60 minute period, but spread over 2 clock hours. He said it would be 5kw, it resets every hour.

Now I just have to see how I can set my 2 A/C units to not run within the same clock hour period between 12-7.

The tariff sheet, which is the official rate filed with the Corp Commission clearly says otherwise. I think I would believe that before the interpretation of a CSR who probably has no concept of what a moving average is. This is the same thing as the 90 day moving average of the Dow.

Two CSRs and my bill going back 8 months or so corroborates the demand periods being based on clock hours.

My peak usage by hour in June 14 was 5.75, but the demand charge on my bill is 5.5.

That's backwards though isn't it? In either scenario, how could the billed demand be lower than actual usage?
