I wish they had and enforced a minimum speed for the HOV lane out here. It's amazing that one slow vehicle can literally clog up a mile of 4 lanes during non-peak hours.

I am not from here but I was always taught/told that the far left lane on a multi-lane freeway is the "fast" lane. And if you are in that lane and going slow it's actually other drivers' duty to give ya the bird.

Am I the only one?

Is it a HOT lane, where you have to pay a toll? I'd be really ticked if I was paying good money to be in a HOT lane and be stuck behind a slow driver - but somehow, I really don't think this is a problem around here...lol.

HOV is NOT a fast lane even though it's located on the left. Also, I highly doubt that anyone driving on the HOV is going under the speed limit... Whenever I encounter a slower vehicle on HOV, simply pass it on the right and get back on the HOV without flippin them off.

I travel on the 101 everyday, what I'm saying is that you often can't get around them and it just slows the whole freeway down. It's not uncommon for me on the 101 east section to be headed north and for 10 miles sometimes you just can't get around these folks.

so it is not an unwritten rule out here that the far left lane is a fast lane?

It may not be specifically defined as a fast lane, but there are signs that say "Slower traffic keep right," so by deduction, the lanes on the left are for faster traffic. Having 2+ people does not require someone to use the HOV lane, it's just that they are allowed to. Going slow, however, has a higher priority because traffic needs to flow as smoothly and safely as possible. Regardless of how many people are in the car, being slow and being in the left lanes is disruptive and can be unsafe. Ergo, they need to be moving their slow booty over to the right!

During non-peak hours, the HOV lane should be treated as any far left lane - for passing. Most drivers here are completely oblivious.

Usually snowbirds or Prius drivers (staring at their MPG indicator) in my experience.
