You guys know that the OP was writing about booking flights from Canada to Phoenix right?? And anyone who suggests that you wait until last minute to book such flights has no knowledge of Canadian flying. There will be no deals on flights from Canada to Phoenix in last couple of weeks before flight. Flights are almost always full and the cheapest seats sell long before the flight takes place, it's not like flying inside the US.

How would we know that? Unless I missed it, that was never mentioned, and I have no idea where the OP is located. The only airport I saw referenced was SFO (San Francisco).

Like I'd rather take Amtrak than rely on United, or ride in the back of a hay filled pickup truck even.

Let's hear it for Amtrak, and especially for the hay-filled pickup truck! Yee-haaah!

The OP mentioned WestJet, a Canadian airline, as his new plan. If you didn't know who they were a quick google would have helped you. Instead you went on to give suggestions that just don't work. Probably a decent idea to not post answers to threads you don't understand.

I have a feeling I understand how airlines work pretty thoroughly, actually, but thanks for the advice The OP seemed to think that AA was cancelling flights just to anger people, and I can assure that that is not the case.

I could mention Qantas but I would hope one would never assume that I am posting from Australia.

That guy who created it is being sued by the big airlines, and apparently, it's against the TOS you agree to when you buy a ticket.

I'm not saying it's not a good idea, I think anyway to save money on a flight is great, but I'd use it judiciously.
