I'm not saying it's not a good idea, I think anyway to save money on a flight is great, but I'd use it judiciously.

If I remember correctly, the suit was dropped and the TRO lifted. I would definitely use it if I were in a bind.

No, it was dropped because of jurisdiction issues. They filed in Chicago and the judge said he had no authority to hear the case...or something along those lines. It is not over at all.

United has threatened to close air miles accounts of anyone they catch doing it.

In a bind, I would absolutely do it too. I just wouldn't do it if I were a frequent traveler.

Again the OP was posting about Canada and in Canada flights actually don't get cancelled and added on a regular basis. And as posted before you will not be getting a better price by waiting for last minute in Canada. This thread took off in a few directions and not many of them had any relevance to the OP.

I could mention Qantas but I would hope one would never assume that I am posting from Australia.

Sure didn't take long to flush that airline down the crapper.
It seems that USAIR was whoring the rates to build a Canadian business. The new management decided that they are going to make money or punt. Now that AA/USAIR doubled its rates, expect the competition to raise their rates too. Re: the early schedules. That's a show stopper for a lot of people. I personally appreciate an early leave to maximize my vacations.

Out of curiosity, what have you been paying before? What is the new price?

Ive flown AA on 4 occasions, and enjoyed each experience. No delays, nice airfare prices, friendly staff. Theyve really taken huge steps to turn around their image, and its been great!
I positively LOVE SWA. I fly them 15 times a year.

Here is why they get so high praise:

1). Their hiring practice aims to chose extroverts with a can-do attitude. IMHO, it works. As they are getting bigger, the extreme high caliber of hiring has been diluted some what but they are still the best in the business.

2). Their credit card frequent flier for flying miles is AMAZING. You get 6,000 back a year which covers the cost of the annual fee. If you charge or fly a combination of 110,000 points or use their credit card $$'s, a companion is FREE from the date you accomplish the 110,000 miles until the FOLLOWING year. I use my charge card $1M a year so it takes me a little over a month to get my miles. My wife as well as myself fly with others for free. They can be added as late as the day before the flight if you want.

3.) Miles for flights are based off of the rate. Most airlines have a minimum of 25,000 miles. A typical flight from MSP to PHX costs $250 RT to $325 RT. That costs about 13,000 to 16,000 total miles round trip. We book one ways. If you cancel, you get all the points back. In fact you can book a couple of options and later cancel the ones you don't like. They give you back the $5 booking fee as well.

4.) 2 Free checked bags.

5.) No change fee.

6.) Military friendly rates. Our DS is at one of the US military Academies for college. He can book the same day of his flight and pay $150-$200 round trip. They allow him to change his flights for free without any penalty even if the rate is higher. In short, they factually go WAY out f their way for active military members.

In short, SWA is customer service focused and therefore I positively love that airline. Any way I can fly with them I will.

Paid 395 in July , same dates are going for almost 800.

WestJet is under 500CDN. Plus have three nonstop daily flights. I don't mind leaving early but getting home at 1AM means a 65 dollar cab ride from the airport as public transit is not running.

EDIT just checked those dates again looks like AA woke and smelled the coffee..now it's 475 USD while WestJet is only 465CDN. AA is still out of the ballpark.

465CDN converting to $354 USD is CHEAP. I'd be booking up all the flights that you need at that price point.

Yes on all of it. I use my Southwest card for business purchases - so we fly free or close to free on most flights we take. The only thing I wish, is that they were at more airports. There are a few I need to fly to for business that Southwest doesn't fly into (and it doesn't make sense for me to fly into another airport and drive to where I need to be). That is my only complaint about Southwest.

Product for my company. I buy high margin product (that I later resell) and my supplies don't mind taking a credit card if they get their funds NOW. Some ding me for a credit card fee. When they do, I punt and take the terms. I electronically pay off my Visa several times a month. I have a $30K line of credit. I just paid it down $20K a few minutes ago.
