I have never understood where Detroit is the only metro area where everyone immediately compares the City of Detroit with an entire metropolitan area somewhere else.

For about the 10 millionth time, the Phoenix Metropolitan Area and the Detroit Metropolitan Area are very comparable in terms of size, density, and population. The city of Detroit is not great, but outside of the city of Detroit the areas are very comparable. Besides, the city only has a population of 680,250 compared to the metro area's 4,441,551.

Back in 1990, Detroit City had 1.1 million people, it's amazing how many people left in the last 26 years

Detroit and Phoenix share the characteristic of being dominated by a single industry and being extremely vulnerable to that industry's ups and downs. In Detroit it's automobiles and in Phoenix it is growth (construction, real estate, etc.).

Phoenix has diversified, otherwise, the 08 recession would have truly done us in.

The longest I went without a job involuntarily was 7 weeks from early Oct-Thanksgiving in 08

Phoenix and the EV sure sorta.

I lived in Surprise during that recession. It nearly destroyed the city. It only recently recovered thanks to more growth.

Yeah, I lived in Gilbert during the height of the recession and now live in the city proper near downtown, so it didn't seem as bad in the areas I'm in

Phoenix is doing good right now, rush hour sucks but other than that Phoenix is smooth sailing. I'm only concerned about water and UHI when it comes to growth, not necessarily the number of people.

My mom works in that industry, she used to work for a construction company in sales and she only was unemployed for a month before she switched to a different field in the same industry. Her target population is now geared to rich people which has been better for her she claims. Most of her jobs go to working on plans for mansions, apparently there is a plethora of people who can afford $1M+ homes who want to live here and remodel their homes.

Comparing Phoenix to Detroit... ummm...
One doesn't see the vast number of abandoned buildings in Phoenix, that's for sure.
