Did a forum search (in Phx section) and didn't really get the answer...

Is smoking (cigarettes) accepted in/around Phoenix area?...

I'm in SoCal and smoke (as filthy and smelly as it is)... I'm always very courteous of others when in public (staying away from groups of people)... But I'm concerned with offending neighbors at home. I smoke outside - and while it hasn't ever been a problem here, I don't know what the culture is there (most things are less restrictive)... Are there areas more accepting than others?

Yes I know, I should quit - but that's not the subject right now.

There are various city ordinances about smoking in public places, etc. As far as smoking at home, in your back yard, odds are it's not going to be a problem. It's not outside the realm of possibility that you'd find yourself living next door to someone who objected, (anything is possible) but it's not at all likely, and there's nothing they could do about it.

What ever you do, DON'T smoke around me.

Arizona was one of the first states to ban smoking just about everywhere in public - by popular vote. That sort of contradicts the image of less restrictive, but it is consistent with attitudes and laws about drunk driving. Laws were changed not too long ago to stop the smokers from hanging around entrances to buildings. You can smoke in your back yard; some bars have outdoor patios where you can smoke, and also casinos. Otherwise, no.

I think it also depends where you live. I see more smokers in some areas than in others. As with anything, people can be judgmental about behaviors they don't themselves engage in but I've never seen much of a fuss over it one way or the other. Since it's not in public places I think most people don't really notice it or worry about it, and this is such a conservative state government that you can smoke all you want on your own property and I highly doubt you'd ever come into any trouble with the law. Your worst case scenario is a complaining neighbor but that could happen in all 50 states.

I rarely see people smoking here. Very rarely actually. People tend to be fairly heath conscious and fit, compared to other places.

My office is next to an HOA management company. Those people are constantly outside smoking. Not just one or two even. I'd say around 10 people in that office are regular smokers. They gather up before work, are always out there at lunch, a few more breaks throughout the day then light up in their cars as they leave at 5pm. I've never seen anything like it. And the older ladies talk like they have a throat full of gravel.

This is the feedback I was hoping for... What areas do you tend to see more smokers?...

It's not a primary factor in where I move - but it's somthing I want to consider...

Thank you

It's not something that I see very often here. Mostly, in low income areas (sorry, that's the truth of it). In my business, I encounter typically around 50-75 different people a week throughout the area (different people every week) and very seldom do I run into someone who smokes.

Smoking has become a class differentiator. In most cases, the less educated and affluent a person is, the more likely he or she is to smoke. I say that as a general observation backed by research, even if it does not apply to the OP specifically. If tolerance of smoking is a high priority, then it would make sense to seek out areas where adults are less likely to have college educations. That doesn't mean the worst parts of town by any means, but it does mean areas that might be considered more blue collar.
