I am looking at different parts of the Phoenix area to move to. One of the areas I came across is the Midtown area near N. Central Ave. There are a few condos there, and it looks like it offers a decent urban lifestyle. I'm originally from NYC so it would be nice to be able to walk to restaurants, museums, nightlife, etc.
Does anybody live there that can tell me how the area is as far as crime, quality of life, etc?

I lived in midtown (though not on Central Ave) the last 4 years and now live downtown, and I personally prefer Downtown

Can you explain a little why you prefer downtown?

Is the downtown livelier with more things to do?

First, it's important to define what Midtown means to you. The term originally described the linear business district along Central Avenue north of Downtown. The boundaries for that area might be seen as First Avenue on the west, McDowell Road or I-10 on the south, 3rd St on the east, and Indian School Road or the Grand Canal on the north. Lately, however, the term "Midtown" has acquired some cachet and is now being used at times to describe adjacent residential neighborhoods. I've even heard it used as far east of 24th Street, which is quite a stretch. With that in mind, are you thinking of the core Midtown business district, where housing options are limited to apartment and condominium buildings along or very near Central Avenue, or are you thinking of the nearby historic districts and neighborhoods with more single family homes?

Sourrounding vicinity.

It's a nice area, but it's not particularly lively or exciting. Midtown caters to the 9-5 crowd for the most part. It has changed for the better though.

I was looking to be able to walk to restaurants in the area and stores. If I get a job close to the light rail that could be a plus.

Yes, a lot more amenities Downtown. Midtown, mainly restaurants and apartments. Downtown is overall more walkable, and is more centrally located if you have to go to the suburbs for any reason
