A lot of the newer wealth in Phoenix comes from technology, and it is still male dominated, just like it is in "Man Jose.". So you get a bit of the Silicon Valley effect, and I have seen it in tech heavy NoVa, too. Guys making g well over six figures and they end up at a lot of " sausage parties," with not a girl in sight, yet they are mostly a straight bunch. Escorts a few times per year at plain stupid prices.

At a former job I used to encounter multi-millionaires on a near daily basis. One observation I made was how many of them did not flaunt their money and drive vehicles you'd associate with someone of their wealth. In fact, I drove a nicer vehicle than most I encountered. These were folks from Scottsdale and Paradise Valley as well for those that love to throw accusations around as to how they live and act.

As to the o.p. the dollar will go further here than it will in NYC or LA. Less income here will go toward the "luxury" of living here.

To save so you don't have to work as hard (or security).

So save it all on the chance you live long rather than enjoying most during your most mobile years and saving a little in the hope you make it to retirement?? Count me out.

But if you save a lot, you can reach retirement sooner!

With that said, I have always been in the camp: "Enjoy today (vacations, some toys that I'm more passionate on), and save for tomorrow." Because I saved, I've been debt free for a couple of decades. Now work as hard as I want versus being a slave to debt including a house payment. And giving the government too much money and working my life away. In short, I simply live under my means. IMHO, that's the reason to accumulate $$'s.

Don't know if it's still true, but 15 or so years ago the local newspaper had a story about how the zip code around Arrowhead Mall had more actual millionaires than any other zip code outside of Paradise Valley. Mostly blue collar guys that owned HVAC and plumbing companies who on paper were actually worth a million bucks.
