We walked the whole thing, had some food (it was so bad I asked for a refund), and were done on about an hour. I never ride those rides at fairs. I don't trust them!

We parked in a lot not far away, never felt unsafe.

I can't remember last 20 years one of those rides at the state fair ever having a problem. Sometimes you hear about those parking lot fairs having a problem I never go to those. I ride all those rides with my nephew my wife won't ride them she gets motion sickness too easy we like amusement park rides. Last year we went to Vegas I did that Skyjump off the Stratosphere 829 feet it was fun.

You must have passed by the art exhibit they have every year in the coliseum. It's "underneath" accessed on either the north or west side of the building. I could have easily spent 2 hours just in there but the air conditioning was on full blast and got frozen out. Next time I'll take a sweater or a wrap.

We bypassed the AG buildings, but saw 2 concerts. Saw a show in the coliseum, then we saw a band that was even better on the outdoor community stage. Altogether we were there well over 4 hours.

I don't trust any travelling carnival rides. I stick to the permanent amusement park types.

Arizona is a Constitutional carry state. If you're really worried about safety, you have a remedy available to you right now.

Nonsense. The fairgrounds are adjacent to the Fairview Place and Villa Verde Historic Districts. Four blocks farther east is the Encanto-Palmcroft Historic District which is #1 on the Top 10 Wealthiest Neighborhoods in Phoenix, per the Arizona Republic.

The state fair is nothing like the late 80s early 90s. Back then the gangs run the place and there were fights, stabbings, and shootings. This lead to an extreme police presence and the posse making it safe.

While I agree those are nice areas, we cannot ignore the other areas its adjacent to. Especially as you get closer to I17 or Grand.

I'm not disparaging Central Phoenix (I am also a resident).

Agree. The fair is very close to both gangland and rich people, there is no denying that. I too live in Central PHX and love it.
