You can be left waiting outside the courtroom while they decide who to strike from the panel. There are not many seats out in the hallways, especially in the older buildings.

Got it. I was picturing people waiting outside the building.

Then........they go on how wonderful you are by showing up. Ya, if you don't you get fined, jailed or both.
Slave labor equals jury duty.
This is about right. There for a while, I was called to jury duty about every two years or so at Superior Court. You sit in the assembly room practically all day waiting for your name to be called, and half the time you're dismissed without even being called into the courtroom. In the small chance your name is picked, you sit there and listen to an often boring case. Lucky for me I was able to get out of serving, but all in all it makes for a wasted day. Since I'm a caregiver, I can now be excused, but even that can be a hassle due to having to get a doctor's note and all.
