What do people from the Phoenix Metropolitan Area think about Joe Arpaio?

Since AZ has a majority older and conservative population my sentiment is that they love him, because he represents some of the same values as do they. My personal feeling is that he is a bit too much of a sensationalist to be an effective head County Sheriff.

Tough on crime, which is exactly how he should be.

I hate to think what Maricopa County would be like
without Sheriff Joe and the MCSO

He does his job and not many elected people can say that

He is an embarrassment who has cost this county MILLIONS. But he will probably never be voted out and die in office, because too many people buy his schtick.

To think he's the only one who could be tough on crime WITHOUT losing (or having to settle for big $$) so many lawsuits, and without getting too full of himself to fit in front of a TV camera (his favorite location) one would have to be truly under the ether he's selling.

He can't even run a fair election campaign (he, or someone acting with his knowledge, sends his goons out to take down opponent's signs).

Enough already.

Frankly this guy personifies what's wrong with this state and our county.. he's a loud mouth and narrow minded at best. Yeah he's 'doing his job' but at what cost? Why would crime suddenly spike and all hell break lose if we had a different sheriff? It wouldn't, but he's got all the dolts in this county convinced of it while he squanders your tax money and targets, profiles and segregates people like some kind of fascist. He knows' the game and he's good at it, that's about it, but I think we need some change here. He himself said at one point that he would only run for two terms and now iirc he's on his 5th.. wtf gives? Maybe he doesn't want to lose the revenue streams to his family for all the underhanded business operations he soaks out of running the jails etc (his family operates the vending machines, lord knows what other kind of shady deals he has going). He might appear to be 'tough on crime' but I think it's all smoke and mirror and his credibility is highly suspect.

He's one of the few politicians that gets re-elected without promising the voters "free" goodies.

Mixed...and his numbers are waning each passing year. He is not as popular as he once was.

He reminds me a lot of Dick Cheney - abuses his authority and sensationalizes everything.

He's got the right idea but does it the wrong way. Yes, we should have a tough on crime, tough on illegal immigration stance. No, it shouldn't be a circus. If he just did his job, quietly, behind the scenes, I think he'd have global support across the state. Instead, he's a showman, and makes us look ridiculous - people vote for him because he does his job, but he does it in a really dumb manner, IMHO.
