Thanks for the info. About the traffic you were talking about, wouldn't living in the suburbs be far enough away from main parts of traffic? Which suburb do you like the most and why? Thanks!

No, the suburbs are the reason for the traffic. I live in Surprise and enjoy it very much. Surprise has also bee named as one the safest cities in Arizona. It also appears that Surprise will be named the safest city in Arizona again this year. However, Surprise has heavy traffic coming in and out of it. And the traffic actually increases during the winter when the snowbirds return.

All the suburbs are pretty busy. Everyone has to go somewhere else. Granted, No, they're NOT as busy as central Phoenix. But if you're looking for a total break from the traffic, you're going to be disappointed.

The only ones that aren't all that busy are the suburbs on the edges of the city.. Buckeye, Queen Creek and the like. And in a few years, they'll be the same as all the rest.

Pretty much same as Surprise. Goodyear and Avondale bracket the I-10, the loop 101, and many, many cross-metro arterial streets. I-10 brings in cross-country traffic from L.A. and Texas and also deals with the rush-hour traffic flowing in and out of Phoenix. Goodyear, Avondale, and Surprise all deal with heavy seasonal traffic especially during MLB Spring Training, the college bowls like the BCS Championship, the Fiesta Bowl, Insight Bowl and other huge events in the metro area like the Phoenix Open...etc. The population of the Western suburbs like Surprise, Glendale, Avondale, Peoria, Goodyear, etc also is greater than all of metro Albuquerque and nearing the population of the state of New Mexico for some more perspective.

Yeah, the "benefits" of living in a large metro area! It is NOT for everyone but its a sports junkies mecca...

Yes, you'd avoid much of the above in Buckeye. Not much in terms of amenities, but isn't very busy and close to the I-10 to bring you into town if need be. Also look into Wickenburg and maybe Carefree Cave Creek as these suburbs are somewhat removed from most of the traffic.

If you have your heart set on Arizona you may want to consider Prescott as a place for your parents to retire. There is a large population of retirees in that town. It is at nearly the same elevation has ABQ and has a very similar climate. It is slightly larger than Rio Rancho but a little farther from a major metropolitan area. If you plan on living with your parents there isn't a lot for a 20 year old to do there though. You could always get your parents settled then move to Phoeinix yourself. I found the 90 or so miles to be a nice buffer. Close enough for frequent visits but not so close that they will just drop by unannounced...
