Hi everyone! My husband and I (along with our 3 kids, 2 cats, and a dog..) are looking at re-locating to AZ sometime in the future. We're trying to do as much research as we can, and are basically just looking at cheap foreclosed homes that need work done. If we find a house online we really want to look at, we'll take a week and head on down to view houses, and place any bids we want to place. However, there is a house in the zip code 85041 that we're mildly interested in. What type of neighborhood could we expect? Crime? Good place to raise a family? Any information would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

That area is very hit or miss. You'd want to visit first before making an offer.

If that's the park I'm thinking, it's totally in the "miss."

Lindo Park is definitely hardcore hood. I use to work @ Central and Southern growing up and you could hear gunshoots all night long @ 19th Ave

Guess I'll scratch that house off the list of ones to be serious about.. I don't want my kids growing up in a place like that. Thanks for the info! I'm sure I'll be back with more questions on other areas, all over the state! (our budget is quite small, looking at houses we could probably pay cash for - guess that's why I keep finding ghettos!)

Where will you be working? You want to look in good school districts as well as trying to be close to work. Don't make a big mistake by only going on price.
Goodyear has some very reasonable foreclosed homes and the city is developing nicely. Buckeye is cheap but further away from the Phoenix down town area. Surprise also has some very low priced homes right now.

I too am thinking about relocating to the Phoenix area. The job is located at the base of South Mountain. Can anyone tell me about this neighborhood? I might want to live near by to avoid the commute.

Thanks.

north base or south base? The south side of the mountain is fine, the north is mixed. If you are single there are apts on the north side near the freeway that are OK. There are also newer, gated communities south of Baseline and north of the park that may be alright. On the south side of the mountain is Ahwatukee most of which is OK and a prime family area. Just a little further south and east is Chandler, again, pretty decent.

As you go west along Baseline it gets worse until about 35th Avenue where it becomes what people call "laveen". Laveen is a mixed bag - generally newer homes, but lower income. The schools are not too hot there though if you have kids. It is a place I would definitely rent in before I decided it was for me.
