Better transportation from the suburbs would help immensely in with the parking situations. I'm a fan of extending the T to areas such as Robinson/Airport or Monroeville. Then maybe the money hole dug under the river would get used when it opens.

airport lines are notorious laggards, it should probably be a cap on a successfully built system rather than a table leg...so of thsoe two options I'd go with monroeville. it would be nice if cities started to recognize, what has long been known, that good transit increases the value of the land it serves...which should mean more tax revenue for them to give to their buddies.

Why didn't he walk downtown from Shadyside? There's nothing Il Disingenuino loves more than to suggest that anyone else who doesn't want to walk five miles to get somewhere is "lazy or disabled." So why didn't he walk?

I agree it isn't reasonable to expect a lot of available parking Downtown in the middle of a workday, and I doubt you can build your way out of that problem (build more garages, and they will just be absorbed by more commuters, either through job adds or diverting from transit).

The obvious solution is in fact better transit, although I do wonder if automated cars will eventually make all this a non-issue.

Kevin Sousa, chef and co-owner of Salt of the Earth in Garfield, will open a modern barbecue restaurant, Union Pig and Chicken, on North Highland Avenue in East Liberty.

"The first floor will house five [movie theater] screens and a cafe, and the second will offer a more elaborate restaurant, a full bar and luxury-style seating," said Molly Blasier, president of Blasier Urban. "The top four floors of the building will be office space."

The theater, designed by JKR Partners in Philadelphia and run by Spotlight Theaters, will feature all-digital projection...The building at 200 N. Highland Ave. that will house Union Pig and Chicken, as well as a stretch of properties on Broad Street, are owned by the Wedgwood Group, which has been holding them empty until it found the right tenants...n addition to The Odeon Building, Mr. Cunningham of ELDI confirmed continued plans to put a boutique Ace hotel in the former YMCA building on Whitfield Street, saying a deal could be closed in early 2012.

East Liberty is really getting to the critical mass point in development, and these new announcements will solidify that, with new businesses in the core and the development of the Highland Building. A movie theater at the key intersection of Penn & Highland will be a great anchor.

Took some out of town friends to dinner at Abay last Wednesday and was amazed by the pedestrian traffic in the area. A far cry from what it was a decade ago.

There are now roughly a dozen unique eateries in the block stretching from BRGR on Penn Circle South around the corner onto North Highland and then around the corner again onto Baum. It's really becoming a miniature "Restaurant Row".

And they are still just getting started--in addition to all the projects in the works for south of Penn, Sousa's new place is part of opening up that whole second half of the commercial area north of Penn.
