Ugh! Over the past year, I've had terrible insomnia. (Hence, how you all have gotten to know me so well on here!)

What do you do when you have insomnia?

I can't seem to shake it.

I'll sometimes go 8 days with only 3 hours sleep.

Just when I think it's under control (slept for the past two weeks like a baby), I'm suddenly up all night again without warning!

Granted, my son called at 11:30pm telling me that he had altitude sickness and that my husband isn't doing very well either.

That's good reason to be restless tonight. However, I've got a full day scheduled tomorrow and I have no idea how I'll function.

So how do other Pittsburghers handle insomnia?

Try reading Simon Schama's history of England. While I find that stuff interesting, I can read it in short shifts as I fall asleep... I can hear his voice intoning the words, slowly....

There was another medieval history textbook that was an amazing cure for insomnia... two pages and I'm out. But I'm pretty sure that's out of print.

The other thing -- watch Craig Ferguson on CBS -- he's such a doll! He's funny and cute and Scottish with the accent.... to die for...

He's the reason I'm up -- he's on in 20 minutes here....

Hopes, there are several prescription medications that can help. Even plain old benadryl is harmless if you aren't taking it long term. I use benadryl to sleep occasionally. First of all, do you think you know the cause of the insomnia? Are you stressed out? Do you have anxiety? Are you depressed? Are you ON medicine that's giving it to you?

Once you know the underlying cause, you can treat it better. I feel your pain, I loathe insomnia.

Thumbs up Warm Milk

With honey, if we've got any.

It works every time.

I used to have those problems, though not as severe as yours. Then I took a job requiring me to be on my feet about 90% of the work day. I sleep like a log now, even on my days off. Maybe you should exercise more?

I'm middle aged with 2 teens and a 10 yr old, so I approach insomnia as part of the whole lovely experience (don't want to miss a thing!). Seriously, I force myself out of bed and clean, then read and eventually I fall asleep.

Good luck.

I listen to late night talk radio. If the topic is dull, and the voice a deep baritone or bass, I drift off to sleep.

I was thinking, although I don't know that you ever said this, that you or your husband had something to do with the medical arts. So....see a physician???

Lightbulb Valerian.

Hello Hopes,

I'm sorry to hear about your insomnia; I'm sure that's really annoying to deal with.

I suggest trying valerian. Its an herb that comes in capsule form and can be purchased over the counter. And if I'm not mistaken, valerian is the plant from which the drug valium originates.

The brand I purchased came in capsule form and it smells like stinky feet , but a couple of those before bedtime really mellowed me out. And there were no adverse side effects. Whole Foods or your friendly neighborhood co-op grocery or "health food" (shouldn't all groceries be considered health food stores? I digress.) store might have it.

Also, I find that exercising more and eating healthier helps me sleep better. Or maybe its all the wine. Haha! I'm kidding.

Sleep well!
