I'd hope so. "Village of Shadyside" pretty blocks things off until Marchand, but from Marchand down through Festival I think you could have a few connections.

The vast majority of the City, and in fact the majority of Shadyside, has streets connecting to local commercial areas--including this area, really, via Aurelia, Marchand, or Walnut.

I'm not saying no one would object, but I would hope such petty NIMBYism would be overridden.

I, for one, wouldn't object, and especially since the main body of Shadyside is connected with East Liberty via several routes, I can't understand an objection to connecting one of the streets above to BSq 2. It's not as if people living outside of Shadyside would normally use it, most would take the larger streets around the perimeter. Walking from that area to Bakery Square requires either a long detour or a bit of walking on a muddy footpath, so I can't see how an actual street or a paved footpath would hurt things.

I've never understood the concept of creating some sort of hub of activity and then severely restricting the number of ways to get there. All that does is create atrocious traffic aggravations. I can think of a couple places I have been to that have created that situation on a grand scale, where it can take hours to merely leave the parking lot (Woodbury Common or Gillette Stadium).

Ironically the more connections, the less traffic on any given route--and I agree this would be unlikely to be a major access corridor anyway (although maybe some people would cut through from Shady or Fifth).

Kevin Sousa is now doubly committed to East Liberty. While finalizing plans for Union Pig and Chicken, a Western Pennsylvania-style barbecue restaurant on Broad Street, Mr. Sousa became interested in another vacant property: Station Street Hot Dogs...will serve hot dogs, french fries, soft-serve ice cream and eventually draft beer...[LEFT]The restaurant, which seats about 65 people, will offer counter service, except for one table in the kitchen that will be able to be reserved...and outdoor seating will be available in warmer months.

A bunch of white people making burgers on the grill they got from Walmart, drinking Miller Lite, throwing around a football, and complaining about their jobs.

At least, that's what it's been in my experience.

Sousa taking over that place is definitely a sign of the times.

I was at the Coffee Tree Roasters today when I noticed someone walking out with a large depiction of Bakery Square 2.0. I don't know if it's a proposed design or not, but it looked to be three small office buildings fronting Penn Ave with a bunch of smaller buildings, presumably the homes, behind in Shadyside. I couldn't tell if there was any intention of extending the street grid to the redeveloped area.

I believe forum etiquette requires you to tackle such a person, take a picture with your cell, run to the nearest computer, and post it.
