With what is happening with Cleveland's population, we may have similar populations within the next 10-15 years

Cleveland had more than 900,000 people by 1950 and was on its way to one million. At the same time, Pittsburgh was at 676,000, so both cities have seen dramatic falls. I hope Pittsburgh can keep up the momentum just begun. I don't see why it wouldn't.

Damn..I can't imagine a Cleveland with 900,000 people. Must've been quite a bustling town.

Cleveland has bigger boundaries than Pittsburgh....676 in Pittsburgh's current boundaries make for a very crowded Pittsburgh and almost every City Neighborhood would be extremely expensive.

So when you're having more deaths outweighing births by a large margin, the fact that Migration is strong enough to tip the scales to positive growth is a huge win more than the top level numbers reflecting.
The Baby Boomer generation is entering its retirement years and will start dying off. The numbers will probably get pretty big in about 10 years, when the oldest hit their mid-70s.

During that period, the Pittsburgh MSA should come out better, because our population of baby boomers is depressed compared to the rest of the country. The boomers were who moved away when the economy went south in the 1980s, after all, with many older workers sticking around and semi retiring early. Still, these older workers were by and large past their childbearing age, which depressed birth rates, and they've been entering their "peak death" period over the last decade.
