Actually it makes perfect sense. Prior to 2019, ShotSpotter was only from East Liberty to Homewood/Lincoln-Lemington. Now it covers Garfield to East Hills, the Hill District-Uptown-Oakland, most of the Northside, Southern Hilltop / South Side, West End neighborhoods and Hazelwood-Glen Hazel. See link below:
https://www.wpxi.com/news/investigat...rgh/816510641/.

According to tyovan4’s link, in terms of non-fatal shootings Homewood North was the only neighborhood to have double digit numbers/averaging one a month for 2019 (not including December). Then Homewood South. Then Carrick led all other neighborhoods at third place. ShotSpotter goes as far as Knoxville but perhaps they should expand it to Carrick!

Homewood South used to be slightly worse off than Homewood North but given all the investment and demolitions/redevelopment (600 Collier, 7300 Fleury, 7300/7500 Formosa, Panke, 500 Rosedale, 7200-7500 Susquehanna, 7200-7300/7600 Tioga, etc.) Homewood South could improve. Whereas, Homewood North above Frankstown Avenue has seen pretty much no investment to my knowledge. For the past 20 years gangs have overrun Idlewild Street, Race Street, Murtland Street, Mt. Vernon Street, even longer (30 years) on North Lang Avenue, Monticello Street, Wheeler Street and Blackadore Avenue. Not to mention the 1020 Brushton Avenue Homewood North (section 8) Apts where gunfire was so common in 2015 that when a double homicide occurred inside a building’s unit the residents didn’t even call 9-1-1. Or public housing at Homewood North off Mohler Street where the alleged Wilkinsburg Massacre suspects rep’d. Homewood North public housing scattered sites are sprinkled throughout the northwest portion of the neighborhood on 7400 Fuschia Way, 7400 Stranahan Street and 7300-7500 Upland Street. The intersection and block of 7200 Frankstown Avenue at North Homewood Avenue is where folks from the neighborhood congregate with fights, shootings, drugs, loitering, etc. The only blocks that have gotten cleaned up are the boarded up 7000/7200 Forest Way rowhouses and 900-1400 Sterrett Street (which is partially due to previous decade gang indictments).

Homewood South is like that on 7300-7600 Kelly Street/apts, 7300/7500 Hamilton Avenue rowhouses/apts, 500 Cora Street rowhouses, 7900 Inglenook Place rowhouses and most notably the intersection/block of Frankstown Avenue and 800 Brushton Avenue. These blocks along with the night clubs, bars and what’s left of the criminal element on the aforementioned redeveloped/demolished blocks bring the whole neighborhood down. What’s crazy is what kills Homewood South: i.e. rowhouse apartments and local small business corner stores is what has saved/preserved other neighborhoods such as Allegheny West. The difference is rowhouses there are not run by slumlords and corner stores are more healthy than the food desert grocery stores / molt liquor and cigarillo “blunt” stores of the ghetto (often ran by foreigners who live outside the neighborhood)!

Homewood West is a small and mostly quiet part of the area but trouble comes from off its side of Murtland Street. In the mid 2000’s gang activity was really bad on Inwood Street. Throughout the early-late 1990’s it was really bad in/around Dallas Parklet. Currently things seemed to be simmered down but that can always be subject to negative change given the nature of gang activity.

Right. If you look at 2014 when gun violence was at its highest in the city since 1993, there were even less shootings on record than the 11 months of 2019. However, one could assume that this is simply not the case. Due to new technology officials are able to better account for shots fired as gunfire is so regular residents don’t always call 9-1-1. For example, places such as Homewood North, Homewood South, Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar, East Hills, Hazelwood, Knoxville, Sheraden, Perry Hilltop and Marshall-Shadeland had close to/over 100 shots fired in 11 months of 2019. Places such as Larimer, Garfield, Carrick, Allentown, Crafton Heights, Bedford Dwellings, Middle Hill were next in line with about 50 and up.

In relation to outside the city, parts of Clairton, Duquense, McKeesport, Mt. Oliver, Penn Hills, Stowe Rocks, West Mifflin (section 8/public housing), Wilkinsburg, the 15104 boroughs, even East Pittsburgh/the Turtle Creek Valley have a lot of regular gunfire these days and would probably put up similarly high numbers like with regards to the homicide count.

3000+ gunshots a year is still a disturbing number. I look forward to the day when those that defend criminals quit defending them, the consequences for these illegal practices are more severe, and the clowns involved, especially repeat offenders, are put away for good.

Thanks to the shot spotter detection system New Year's eve/day shootings were nonexistent. I did not hear the constant ringing of AK 47 shots at midnight like in years past. Shot Spotter sends police to the address of origin.

Shot spotter sounds awesome.

Hopefully when it happens again, police go to the address of origin and arrest and lock up the violator/s.

Would you just hear them on your street presumably from the East Hills Apts at Wilner Drive/East Hills Drive/ Bracey Drive or 2100 Parkhill Drive Maple Ridge Apts (“C-City” Seagirt Street area or Hunter Park/Laketon area of Wilkinsburg also possible depending on the block/street), or would they occur in your part of the neighborhood as well?

Well, a woman who was originally shot in Penn Hills died in Pittsburgh, so now Pittsburgh has its first homicide of 2020.

I think the city problems have filtered out to the suburbs.

I miss the city and county of the late 90s and early 2000s. Things were pretty stable with crime. It was all in Homewood, Central Northside, Fairywood, St. Clair Village, Mckees rocks Terrace, Wilkinsburg, Rankin and Braddock. Most of the eastern suburbs were still pretty desirable, west Mifflin was still decent, never had to go through metal detectors or worry about crime at kennywood. Penn hills was still a good suburb and safe. Monroeville was also much safer. Sto-Rox used to have a fire fighters parade, one of the largest in the country and a fair on the football field. Now shootings near the high school. You never heard of shootings in places like Kennedy township. Even places like Sheridan, Carrick, Marshall Shadeland used to be good working class neighborhoods. I’m sorry I just don’t think the county and city are better with crime. :It’s widespread now and make some once livable neighborhoods and suburbs undesirable. I think it was a more livable city and county back then, before crime filtered out to everywhere.
