I know what you mean Cindi. I used to live in Manhattan. I just hated the skyscrapers and the noise and there were just way too many people. That was all unanticipated.

Based on posting history, Cindi appears to be from Miami. The city of Pittsburgh by itself has a greater elevation difference than the entire state of Florida. In fact, the difference is almost twice that of Florida, and most of Florida's hills are found in the panhandle area, quite far from Miami. Someone living in Miami could probably go for years without seeing a real hill, and certainly nothing like what are found everywhere in Pittsburgh. I'm sure it takes some getting used to (though "hating" the terrain is a bit much). The hilly terrain is one thing I like about Pittsburgh, it makes driving much more fun and scenic that it normally is in places like Illinois (outside the northwest), most of Indiana, or most of Florida.

Deer, of course, are found everywhere in the east, and they basically go wherever they want to go. There's not much anyone can do to keep them from wandering onto a roadway if they want to. You just have to be cautious, especially in rural areas at night. I hope to one day drive around Newfoundland, where I can engage in some moose-dodging.

Not a moose, but check out this monster! We drove up next to him at Olympic National Park. He was right on the side of the road, we pulled along side of him, and I snapped pictures out of the car window. He was incredibly close to the side of the road. When we arrived at the ranger station, there were warning signs that they were very aggressive and were charging people and cars. This dude could have charged right at me through the car window!

Deer, hills, dark = no prob for me. Poor maintenance, poor lighting, poor signage = problems. We once hit a deer in Utah.

Dark and poor lighting are the same thing.

Well, not exactly. Dark is the sky condition, means the sun has gone down. As far as dark roads, that's kind of expected in rural areas. Poor lighting in city/suburban areas where the traffic is heavier is a different issue.
