Why should it take 30-50 years? Where did you get that? The article said 'years', not 50 years, and it added that even before the minerals are out of the ground, the activity will begin and foreign investment will flood into the country.
It is an educated guess as to how long it will take to restore peace and enough confidence for multinational corporations to risk investing hundreds of billions of dollars in capital. Realize that once they make the decision to invest it will likely take 10 years to develop the mines and the infrastructure to needed to export the raw ore so it's a pretty conservative estimate. 10 years before the (already) 35 year long civil war ends, 10 years after that before confidence is restored, and 10 years after that before the first possible mine would start producing.
All of those were buried during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war because they were unstable EVEN THEN! They certainly were not anything Iraq could use as they disposed of them between 1980-1988 because they were unusable! Even the Bush administration admitted this just like it admitted there were no terrorist camps in Iraq.
Wait, you said they werent there, now they were there, but burried..
911 commission report "Bin ladin apparently honored this pledge, at least for a time, although he continued to aid a group of Islamist extremists operating in part of Iraq (Kurdistan)"
"In 2001, with Bin Ladin's help, they re-formed into an organization called Ansal al Islam. There are indications that by then the Iraqi regime tolerated and may even have helped Ansar al Islam against the common Kurdish enemy"
"Bin Ladin himself met with a senior Iraqi intelligence officer in Khartourm in late 1994 or early 1995"
"two al Qaeda members reportedly went to Iraq to meet with Iraqi intelligence"..
"Iraq officials offered Bin Ladin a safe haven in Iraq"
Seriously, why do I bother reading official reports when we have such experts like you here on CD claiming they are wrong?
There were no WMDs which Saddam had at the time of invasion. There were old disposed off canisters bured 15 years before because they'd gone off just as the US army has buried or dumped at sea millions of tons of these canisters. Why can't you accept GWB himself saying (after that lame Fox propaganda piece was published BTW) that there was no WMD possessed by Saddam? It's very simple.

Reason: personal attack
hmm is there now a real reason as to why we seem to want to be involved in Afganistan?
We have been involved since 2002. This thing will either put a stop to the fighting, or it escalate it. The Taleban might want to fight twice as hard knowing there are rices under the ground. Time will tell.
