A group of teenagers in western New York has been accused of harassing members of a mosque by yelling obscenities and insults during evening prayers for Ramadan, sideswiping a worshiper with a vehicle and firing a shotgun outside, the authorities said Tuesday.

<snip>

Mr. Vendetti, who is accused of firing the shotgun, was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon and faces up to four years in prison if convicted, Mr. Cardone said.

Asked about the motive, Mr. Cardone said the teenagers used “very poor judgment.”

“It’s just kids doing stupid things,” he said, “but it got more serious when they ran into a member of the mosque and they discharged a weapon. And we are taking it seriously.”

How's that for religious tolerance in the US?
At least they caught the criminals.

The crux of the initial post is-

1. Religious intolerance against Muslims is pervasive and common. This is factually incorrect, as the majority of violence directed against a particular religious group is against Jews.

2. Since we are all religious bigots, the Muslims should be allowed to build thier victory mosque, as it assuages any guilty feelings of muslim persecution, which we are all obliged to feel.

No one condones violence against any religious group. However, statistically, it has been acts of violence against Jews, not Muslims. An isolated act will not convince or sway anyone regarding the construction of the victory mosque at ground zero.

How are they liking their equality now?

Odd that the armed and dangerous teens were held for 40 minutes by unarmed members of the Mosque.

Also speaks of the ''intolerance in the USA'' that the Mosque has been there since 1974.

Ever since the start of the big mosque/community center debate, there have been more reports of anti-muslim and anti-islam violence. Though, I'm not sure how the mosque/community center issue has affected the occurence of these events statistically. Sounds to me these "teenagers" were merely looking for somebody to pick on - and they should be charged as criminals. If it was a church or synagogue, I'd feel the same way.. there are just things you don't do. Screwing with somebody's place of worship is one of them.

As a Jew whose earliest memories are of crosses being burned on my lawn, bricks being thrown through my windows if we displayed a menorah, and general hatred from my neighbors, seriously- what is your point?

There are more Jews in the US than there are Muslims. Jews have a longer history in the US and are more widely spread out. Jews also tend to REPORT more harassment than Muslims do. My Iranian-Muslim friends suffered serious backlash after 9/11. They didn't report it because they feared further retribution.

Just because Muslims might not have faced AS MUCH harassment as Jews does NOT NEGATE what is CURRENTLY happening to them. Also, I see nothing in Chielgirl's post that indicates any minimalization of Jewish harassment- it just wasn't part of the story and honestly is not a big of a problem TODAY as Muslim harassment is a problem in this country.

Obviously, you did not read my post.

I said that no one condones violence or intolerance of any religious group (except, of course, if you are Muslim, intolerance of other groups is perfectly fine).

The purpose of the OP was to suggest-

1. Acts of violence and intolerance of Muslims is common and pervasive
2. Given this "common and pervasive" atmosphere of intolerance and violence against Muslims, it perfectly well explains the objections to the ground zero victory mosque.
3. Due to #2, we are simply a bunch of religious bigots and due to the widespread hatred and bigotry, there is opposition to the 9/11 victory mosque, but no other reasons.

Take home message

Christians - evil
Muslim 9/11 victory mosque- good
