After reading this ammended version of the bill, I'll have to agree with many here, there's too much lard added to it and it doesn't address the real problems and the reasons why many companies have moved overseas, one of which is greedy labor unions.

Companies that move their operations back to the United States will only gain the tax benefits for a short period of time, under some restrictions of course, and when that time expires, they'll go back to being ripped off by the government.

This may look good on the outside, but it's down right ugly on the inside, and in the long run, nobody will benefit from it.
Like many other short term bills dangling money that came out of DC.
Like cotton candy with a rock inside.

This bill will NOT protect Americans. The multi-nationals operate as separate companies in the various countries so taxing them will do no good; they are all subsidiaries.

You think those multi-nationals aren't already set up to take the best financial advantage for their companies ?
I guess you missed the earlier posts. The dems are holding the bill up.

So much for your rant.

Is there a more recent article than this ?

Senate takes up 'anti-offshoring' job bill - Yahoo! Finance (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Senate-takes-up-cnnm-1091210671.html?x=0&.v=3 - broken link)

"Durbin and other Democrats plan to bring the bill up for a vote Tuesday, but the legislation has already come under attack from Republicans and business groups."

It's not Republicans..it's the companies themselves. Get labor costs in line with the other countries and then you can compete once again.
Companies go where they are able to make a profit. You want cheap stuff ? Then the labor cost has to be in line.

Great idea! Won't you be the first to offer yourself to one of those wonderful global corporations for $20 a week?

No? Why not?

My job hasn't been offshored yet but it's just a matter of time.
Computer programmer here. A PhD in India gets $35K (US) per year for programming.

So, you should be willing to work for that, right? After all, as you say, American labor costs have to come down in order for us to be competitive.

Why don't you go first, right now? Why wait? If we're all to be working for third-world wages anyhow, you can be a trend setter who leads the way to back up your rhetoric.

I didn't think so. In reality, off-shoring is someone elses' problem because it hasn't happened to you, isn't it?

A procedural vote is scheduled tomorrow at 11:30 in order to move forward. A Motion (to Instruct the Sergeant at Arms) was held tonight. Honestly not exactly sure what that means, but it passed 48-25 with 27 members not voting (I'm guessing these type of motions simply require a majority of Senators present).

44 Democrats voted in favor of the motion (46 including Lieberman and Sanders) and two Republicans (Brown and Ensign), though that may not translate into votes on whether on not to proceed with the bill. All 25 votes against were Republicans, 13 Democrats and 14 Republicans did not vote.

Here's a crazy idea- instead of just killing a bill, how about if they propose some changes to it, to eliminate some of the parts they're not happy with?? Ohh, I know why they wouldn't do that- it'd require them to come up with solutions, rather than just towing the party line of "if the Dems came up with it, it can't be good- let's kill it!"
I believed that's what the Republicans wanted to do.. to change it, however speaker pelosi has stopped them every time they try... but yes, republicans do add pork to a bill... so who are you going to blame now? The dems stopping the republicans making any changes to the bill? Or the republicans who wouldn't allow pork-laden bills to go through... we all KNOW that the democrats are trying to create bad press for the republicans with their BS legislation... we can stop trying to be blind but the liberals wouldn't like that...
