Problem is that now, with the passage of this farce called the food "safety" act if you "grow your own", under the new law, you are automatically a "farm" if you so much as sell or trade any of your product. And, government agents, via the FDA, can enter your property without a warrant, search it, destroy your garden if they deem it a danger or non-compliant. This was devised to put small farmers, hobby farmers, and the otherwise self-sufficient over the ropes of government tyranny.
We are not a free country. Our ability to control our own health treatment and our food sources have been removed from us under OBAMA.
We are all Socialists now.
Those who support the government controlling all food in the US please point out to me where in the Constitution these powers ae enumerated. Don't give me that "general welfare" garbage.
Repeal The patriot act. Stop regulating things to death. Or weight until the dodo hits the fan then the fun will start. We need to let people just be. The government is starting to be afraid of the people this is not a good sign it means that they are not taking care of the problems that we elect then to take care of and are hold power for themselves from US.
“Require that each person (excluding farms and restaurants) who manufactures, processes, packs, distributes, receives, holds, or imports an article of food permit inspection of his or her records if the Secretary believes that there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to such food will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
I'm not sure what to make of this "each person" comment, why person and not business? Does that mean this bill allows the FDA to control the actions of mom's canned goods, or the person who grows a small garden and attends the local farmer's market?
They key words are "Manufactures", "processes", "packs", "distributes", "imports". If you're just an average Joe with a backyard garden, you do none of those things. If you are manufacturing, packing, processing, distributing, and importing - then you are a business.

Growing combined with packaging is manufacturing, canning/dehydrating/freezing is processing, sharing with friends/family/neighbors is distributing once product leaves your property. Slippery slopes usually are the rule rather than the exception when it comes to government regulation.

Sharing with friends/family is much different than putting products on a grocery store shelves or setting up a stand at a farmer's market with the intent to make money. This bill is focuses on businesses.

and which of these businesses do you think will favor this bill? big ones like kraft, who openly endorsed the bill, or the small guys who will see their right to make an honest living taken away from them?

Please explain "honest living taken away from them". The bottom line is, we NEED this bill because the industry is unable to regulate itself - it's been proven in the past 2-3 years. No one is saying the small guys can't do business, but they need to follow the same rules as everyone else.

No we already have laws regulating the food industry, this was about control of our means of feeding ourselves and nothing more.
Food modernization act? Gays in the military? Let them eat cake...
