They sure were Communists and many of them were exposed by their later behaviors. I doubt that many people have ever studied the Venona Papers in fear that they may realize that McCarthy was not what he was so strongly accused of being.
I was against McCarthy while he was doing his thing but after I found my way away from the Democrats when they nominated McGovern, an avowed socialist, I started looking at him and what he tried to do with different eyes. Even that far back progressives were very strong in the Dem party.
But King had ties with the IRA while they were training in Communist South Yemen with the Communist; Japanese Red Army, Bader Meinhoff Group, and Black September
Peter King to take up the McCarthy Gavel. Watch out, if you ever looked up into the sky and saw the moon and a star at the same time, you got some splainin to do.

By contrast McCarthy focused exclusively on communist infiltration of government agencies--particularly the State Department. Early on his work was broadly supported. You may not know this but Bobby Kennedy was one of his staffers and McCarthy was godfather to one of Kennedy's kids. McCarthy was brought down because he over reached, launching an investigation into the Army. Of course, Eisenhower, having spent his life in the Army, was protective of that branch and turned against McCarthy at that point. That gave the media and feckless politicians carte blanche to demonize the senator. The bottome line, however, is that McCarthy was more right than wrong and the Verona Papers, revealed after the fall of the Soviet Union, confirm that.
The Verona Papers are also widely disputed. Are you also trying to claim McCarthy's public rants weren't a direct influence on the actions of the HUAC and other witch hunting groups. And since when, when peoples' lives and livelihoods are involved, is "more right than wrong" an acceptable practice?
No, the only thing that would embarass me relative to McCarthy would be if I believed in and supported the SOB.

Communists were not shouting "Stalin is great" and murdering thousands of American civilians on US soil, Muslims are.
