AMERICAN LIBERALISM, synonymous today with big government, the exact opposite of the liberalism of Edmund Burke and other British champions of individual liberty, arose essentially from the use of the state to alleviate the most severe economic inequalities in society. In Great Britain this began in the competition between the Liberal and Conservative leaders, William Ewart Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli, between 1865 and 1880, and among major European powers with the quest for an unthreatening working class with the founder and first chancellor of the German Empire, Otto von Bismarck. Britain had a great battle over pensions under the chancellor of the exchequer just before the First World War, David Lloyd George.

The American Spectator : The Decline of Liberalism

Oups, sorry for the thumbs up, it's a mistake !
Aside from that it's an interesting article.I don't think liberalism will die, but it'll decline (same thing for the social conservatives, both can't fit in a moderate nation)

Yeah, right. Conservatism is also on decline.

Libertarianism will take over. Hey man. I'd be up for that.

Yeah I can't see liberalism declining. It seems like it is very in vogue these days. Makes people feel all "warm n fuzzy" in theory at least, to consider themselves a liberal.
I think it is a way of not dealing with the hard reality of life for many.

Yes, and the Nov 2010 election will help us roll back some of that "liberalism" we have been tortured with for the last 30+ years.

I think I am. While the Left was busy fretting about the GOP taking over the House, the real danger was the historic wins for the GOP in state and local legislatures across the country.

The people most likely to be Conservatives are the slowest growing demographic in the country.

Conservative know this and they are TERRIFIED. That is why you are seeming them be so aggressive in their policies and actions. They want to put policies and laws into place it will take years to reverse in order to maintain social, economic and political power.

In the short term the Conservatives are going to win some battles. But in the long term they are going to lose the war.

To be honest it is true that the extreme far right Protestant conservatives are the ones that are slowly growing, however, slightly left of the extreme far right are the regular conservatives. The national culture is regularly conservative, a smaller portion are moderate, and a very small percentage are actually true liberals. True liberals enjoy small government control/socialism (remember libraries, public education, road systems, health care are socialism that are appropriate), morals based on the individual and secularism, and freedom from the chains of religion: true liberalism is more in line with libertarianism.

Chris Hedges has written about this in his book entitled Death of The Liberal Class. Dr. Michael Parenti has been writing about this since his book entitled Democracy for the Few.
